the tree fascinated me. its countless carvings of couples who were deep in love . the fact that nobody came to see it anymore. the tree made me wonder.

i dug my hand into my jean pockets and i heard a voice mutter. was i going crazy?

"hello" a tall boy with highlighted hair, who looked around my age, greeted me.

'no one came here', i thought, 'no one ever'
"hi."

the boy took a seat at the trunk of the tree and began to play with the hem of his flannel. he cleaned an area of dead leaves and patted it, nodding at me. i took a seat next to him hesitantly.

"i'm jovani," he said. "what's your name?"

i was scared. he must've been too. no one ever comes to this tree. it holds too many stories that weren't pleasant. "i-i'm dylan."

"well, dylan. it's getting late. look. the sun is setting. but tomorrow, you'll be here, right?"

my hands were shaking and my lips trembling. "yes, jovani."

i walked the short cut home to my lonely apartment and went immediately to bed.
