"What is this?" I ask Izzy as I rummage through stuff in the attic, the yells from our parents echoing throughout the walls.
"Oh! Don't you remember? Deborah? And she had her daughter, the oldest one... Emmaline. We had some great summers me and her, I think she had another baby girl a couple years later, last I heard she moved out somewhere in California, couldn't be too sure." She talks a mile a minute as she goes down the stairs with some more boxes.
I linger over the face of Emmaline and memories of me and my friends come flooding back to me, we couldn't have been at least 10 when we started throwing pebbles at Izzy's window, scaring the girls. I always thought it was weird of her, being 12 like me to be hanging around girls Izzy's age, 16 and 17. I only came in contact with her once.
It was a Halloween party and I was stoked to be able to dress as something other than Woody from Toy Story or Peter Pan. I liked being Scream, my buddies being Jason and another with a Chucky mask. I saw her in a pink tutu with purple wings. She was a huge contrast between Izzy's friends, being slutty cats and cops. She was looking at the trick or treaters come and go, being the one in charge of giving out candy and the only one in the house still connected with the innocence of Halloween.
I crept up behind her, making sure the trick or treaters were too busy with the haunted houses down the street. I grabbed her by the waist and the impact didn't hurt either of us but the shocking way someone paid attention to her is what caught her off guard. I was thinking of her flesh being in my right arm, she was tiny for being 12 and I towered over. She didn't even bother to scramble away.
"Are you scared?" I said through my mask.
"Are you?" It was the first words she'd ever said, they were so soft and I made some sort of noise that sounded like it came from an animal and ran off.
