POV: Dan

I shuffle my way down the familiar off-white corridor of the place I've called 'home' for the past few months, doing my best to avoid obstacles and failing miserably due to my groggy state. You'd think I'd have the placement of every obstruction in this route memorized by now since I've walked it every morning since they took me here.
Upon rounding the corner, a familiar, freckled face meets mine. "Good morning, Daniel," Ms. Panton beams in her usual chipper tone. "A nice sunrise today."
I offer a halfhearted wave accompanied by a soft smile and nod in response. She's right, the sunrise is nice today.
Ms. Panton is the only reason anyone forced into this place is ever the least bit cheery. She seems to make a point to spread positivity, and it is most definitely needed. The majority of the caregivers here treat patients like they are burdensome or even wastes of space- an especially problematic situation seeing as a lot of us ended up here because of the damage done by similar internal mantras. They don't seem to care; they're just here to collect their checks. Whether you're a long-time resident or fresh meat; schizophrenic or bulimic; just down enough to think you need this place or trying to hang yourself every chance you find, they treat you like you just don't matter, like your existence is purely an inconvenience to them. Truly, these individuals should find a new profession.
I begrudgingly continue on the treck to one of my least favorite areas: vitals. The vitals area consists of about ten rooms, each equipped with a nurse and everything they need to check and see how your body is doing. From blood pressure to body temperature to weight, they check it all.
During my time here, it's become blatantly obvious that in order to be released, my vitals and behavior must be bordering perfection. The stress of keeping everything looking good is absolutely unreal, but getting out of here as soon as possible is my number one goal. I couldn't care less if I'm doing just as bad mentally, if not worse than I was when I arrived; this shit is expensive. Expensive and entirely ineffective.

I originally published this around 11/20/2016, wild. I'll spare you the old authors note, here's a snippet though for archive's sake:
"and this is kinda like a little prologue type thing on danyul so yeah #3) i'm gonna try and post once a week but if i get busy i'm sorry school is a l o t rn bUT i'm on break this week so i'll be writing most of the time so you might get a good few chapters (y)(y)(y) [tfw you're on a laptop so you just pretend wattpad does the thumbs up shortcut..kms] also i p r o m i s e not to abandon this one!!! it helps that i actually have a plot line in my head so ye"
Eesh, I cringe. If you knew me back then, get in line for a veterans card. I like the irony of how long this got abandoned after only two chapters. I was so determined to write this; I'm going to make something of it. Inner child healing. If you're reading this, thanks for the support.
