Riley forced a smile on her face as she shook hands with Mrs. Grosver, the kind old lady who never missed a Sunday service. She should be out there giving out autographs and greeting her fans with hugs but here she was . . . like always. Ever since she was little, Riley dreamed of being on stage where she would sing for all to hear and as she grew up, she really believed that was where she would be. Except that would not be her.

Last summer, she attempted to get her father's approval on her dream. When she explained about how much she cared for the art, he dismissed her and gave her the names of a few colleges where she could get "real-world" degrees specifically in the medical field.

"Honey, let's go!"

She whipped around to see her father waving her over to the church van, the only car they owned. She wasn't exactly embarrassed of the vehicle but it wasn't really ideal to roll up to school in a bright blue van that blasts "Jesus loves you".

Walking over, she slipped into the car that was already playing the familiar tune and leaned her head against the window.

"Good service, right? I worked extra hard on my sermon, did you like the jokes?"

Riley hummed my approval. Mr. Vance glanced over to his silent daughter.

"OK, Riley. What's bothering you?"

Riley sat up straight, reciting her pre-prepared speech in her head. She had been waiting for the right time to present her new and improved argument that was loaded up with facts.

"Well, in today's sermon you talked about being open minded and to embrace the new, right?"

Mr. Vance nodded, proud that his daughter had been listening.

"And you always tell me that you practice what you preach, so why don't embrace the idea that I want to sing? That's God's calling for me, I just know it. It will be great! I just need the chance to be discovered, which according to my research, won't be too hard if I'm at the right place in the right time. You see, I was googling some things and I saw that Winston Kingston, the guy who owns Kingston Records, likes Manny's Diner and-"

"Slow down there, sweetie."

Riley laughed nervously, "Sorry."

Mr. Vance sighed. His daughter had been crazy with the idea of being a famous singer since she could talk but he knew how dangerous the music industry was and she was blinded to that. She thought it was all laughter and fun.

"I just...I just don't understand why - Honey, the music industry is not for you. You have talent but I think you should go for something stable. Maybe a doctor of sorts?"

Riley rolled her eyes. "Right, forget it. I knew you wouldn't understand."

It was silent until the Vance's drove up to their driveway.

"And by the way dad, the jokes were terrible."
