Viola POV
I wake up to my mum shaking me awake. "Honey you need to get up, we have to go into town today." She smiles down at me. I jump up out of my bed and run over to my wooden closet. I choose the clothes I want to wear for the day. I ran down stairs to see my mum cooking breakfast and dad sitting at the kitchen table. I smile and run up and jump on my dad's lap. "Morning daddy," I say as I jump off his lap. "Morning sweetie. How did you sleep?" He smiles down at me. "Good daddy." I walk away over to my seat at the tale and wait for breakfast. I look out the window, the sun is just starting to rise, and the birds are flying high in the sky and the light spreading of snow on the cobble stone street. I look up at mum as she lays some eggs and bread in front of me on the wooden table. I grab a fork and start eating "mummy, when are we going to the market?" I ask her chewing on my food "as soon as you are done sweetie" she says looking at me with a fond smile. I finish up my food not long after and I grab my basket and I wait at the front door for mum. I look at the steps in front of me that lead to the front door I look up at the red brick walls of the exterior of my house. It has a wooden frame and some new metal beams from new repairs we just had. I look to my right and see the snow covered path that leads to the big oak tree. It is covered lightly, dusted with snow. I look to my left and see the busy road full of people out and about visiting neighbors, going to the market, and kids playing in the street. I hear the door shut behind me I turn around to see mum "come on let's go" I smile and jump down the stairs and run a couple of steps ahead of mummy "come on, you old lady" I giggle at my mum. She laughs lightly at my behavior. She catches up and we walk to the market, leaving our foot prints in the light snow.
We walk along the coble stone path as the sun comes up and slowly starts to melt the snow. I look down at my shoes as they hit the hard ground with a 'clack'. I feel a cool breeze that blows my dark blue hair off my face. I can feel the heat of the sun on my back, warming me. I smile at the feeling. I sniff the air to smell the sweet smell of the market. I hear the busy people running around and yelling to customers to get their best deal. "Viv come on, let's go over here." She says pointing to the green vegetables. I nod and follow her. We walk over to the stand full of fresh veggies. Mum grabs some lettuce, avocado, broccoli, and spring onion. We pay the shop owner and walk to the stand next door to buy some bread. We point out some rolls and two loafs of bread to the shop owner. "How are you lovely lady's today?" The lady asks us as she bags our bread for us.
"Great, you?" My mum reply's as she pays.
"Fine. Thanks for asking. "She smiles.
"Any big sales today?" My mother questions.
"Yes I have actually. A man brought five loafs of square bread. I asked if he wanted me to cut them up as he preferred but he shook his head. But something was not right with that man. I usually don't judge but this took me by surprise.
"How so?" My mum spoke as she slightly tilted her head.
"Well...This man wore clothing I have only seen on people that worked for the leaders. The clothing was thick. I have only seen thick clothing on sentry guards." The woman's face turned into a frown as she hands my mum the bread. "Why was he in this part of the colony? Who's this little one?" The woman's frown left her face as she looked down at me. I looked up at my mum expecting her to tell the lady, but my mother simply gave me node towards the woman.
"I'm Viola" I giggle.
"What a lovely name Viola." The shop owner's gaze is soon shifted to our bread in a woven bag. The kind lady hands us the bread and mother greets the lady goodbye. "Well we best be going. Have a lovely day." my mum says as she waves goodbye. I follow my mother's actions and wave back with a smile. "What else do we need mummy?" I look up at her.
"We just need to get some meat and then we can go home." She smiles down at me. We wait in line to get what we need. I look around the market to see people running the stalls are running back and forth to sell their products to customers and shouting deals to get rid of produce. I see kids running around playing with other kids pushing past the crowds of people.
As mum is getting our meat I am focused on the world around me the different people moving through the market to get what they need. I watch as the crowds and lines grow for each stall. I look up at my mum and smile at her, she notices my look and smiles back down at me. I turn around to get better look at what is around me. I look behind me to see an old man selling fruit he must have grown all looks delicious; the old man was serving customers. More people lined up waiting to be served. I look past the line to see two young kids around my age, they are most likely siblings the boy looks around checking if anyone is looking. I don't think he sees me then looks at the girl as says something that I can't here because of the crowd. I watch closely as they both grab some fruit and start running away from the stall. My eyes follow them until they are covered by the crowd.
The first day of the market is slowly coming to a close. People are returning home as the sun is setting in orange, pinks and yellows across the sky, mum and I return home and start preparing dinner with the food we got today at the market. I help my mum until she tells me to get changed and ready for bed so I can go after dinner. I run up stairs and get changed and get ready for bed I run back down stairs and see that my dad is home. "Hello sweetie." He smiles as I run up and hug him "hi daddy" I smile at him "dinners ready" mum calls from the kitchen I run and climb up on my chair ready for dinner mum sets the food on the table I dig in very hungry "are you excited for tomorrow?" my mum asks I nod my head mouth full of food
"well once you are done put your plate in the sink and get into bed and will be up soon" I go what she says and get in to bed and look out my window to see the moon has come up and the stars are glistening in the dark sky I hear the door creak open to see my mum "night mummy" I say as she tucks me in "night darling" she smiles
as she turns the light off I shut my eyes, falling into a temporary darkness.
