I sighed loudly. This bar was super lame. I fiddled around with the straw in my tequila sunrise while trying to hide my face as much as possible with my other hand and my blue hair- well at least enough so I didn't look like a total idiot while doing so.
"Don't even start, April!" Dixy warned me from across the table. Dixy was a tall, skinny, blonde beauty with enchanting blue eyes.
"Yeah really, you look like you are being tortured!" Huber chimed in. Huber was a saucy, latino man with the world's most adorable accent.
I scoffed, "Well what if I am?" They both rolled their eyes at me.
Dixy and Huber are both significantly older than I am, but they are young at heart. They are the best friends anyone can ever ask for- and we also all work together! We're all Dog Groomers at a little shop called Pampered Pets in Oakland, CA. These two are basically my only family- I wasn't really ever close with my family. No hard feelings, we just don't talk.
Looking around the bar not much was going on. Just your normal- people chatting, dancing, eating food- blablabla. I'd rather be out at the park or something. It was a nice night out. But nope, I'm stuck here, being forced to be social.
"You know," Huber started "Normal people go out and stay up late when they know they have a day off the next day. Especially on a FUCKING SATURDAY NIGHT!"
I just smirked, "Whoever said I was normal?"
"Oh come ON, April!" Dixy said. "The best part is people watching, I mean" she added, looking around. Then she found something good. "Over there!"
All three of us looked- a woman that was what you'd call a little obese. Her boobs were about to spill out of her spaghetti strap tank top, her skirt was way too short and she was sitting in a chair with her legs wide open. If she was about 200lbs lighter you could probably see her snatch. I turned back around and Huber was doing a motion with his arm that made it look like he was throwing a harpoon. I shook my head and laughed. "You're going to hell."
"They reserved a spot for me" he said between giggles.
I did my own looking around now, God I really hope no one catches me staring at them, I thought. Then I saw him. Looked like he was picking up a takeout order. It was Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day! Honestly it wasn't uncommon to see him around- he lived somewhere here in Oakland as well. He has been one of my idols since I was a little kid.
"OF COURSE out of all people you would notice him in a crowd" Dixy said, while cackling. "Jeez, look at your face! Just the sight of him makes your eyes twinkle, hehe!"
"She's star struck!" Huber chimed in, "And she wants to-" he then was moving his hands up and down and sticking his tongue in and out; mimicking himself making out with some invisible person in front of him.
I just shook my head, smiling while looking down at my feet. "Really though," I said, looking back at Billie Joe. "He actually looks better nowadays. He looked pretty rough for awhile..."
Dixy and Huber nodded, it was true. He had this drunken freak out on stage at the iHeartRadio Music Festival. He was highly addicted to alcohol and pills. He ended up losing his wife and ended up in rehab. This was about 2 years ago. He's been sober since! But his wife ended up never taking him back. It sucks because whenever I see him out in public he's actually a really nice guy.
"Well, I think it's time to go" Dixy said, standing up from her seat. "If I continue on here I'm gonna end up acting like you" she said to me while pushing my hair back.
"Yeah, wait up though, I have to pee." I said, heading for the restrooms. I went in the bathroom and got business taken care of. I looked at myself in the mirror while washing my hands. They're right and they mean well. I really do need to get out more.
As I was coming out of the bathroom I was looking down at my phone. SLAM! I hit something head-on and fell back.
"Jesus fucking christ" I growled, rubbing my head. I think I collided with a person. Fuck, I don't even want to see who. And why. WHY out of all these people here, I only hear Huber and Dixy cackling over everyone else?
I know why now. I looked up. And I wanted to puke. It was him. Billie fucking Joe was standing there, rubbing his head too. "Ar- Are you okay?" He asked me, holding his hand out to help me up. I wanted to die. Right then and there. But for some reason on that walk to the afterlife his voice was like angels above, reaching out to me.
"It's okay, I'm fine" I choked out, as I helped myself up. I couldn't do anything but look down at my shoes. "I didn't see you- I was looking down at my phone" I mumbled.
Billie grinned, "It's okay, I was too" he said before waltzing into the men's bathroom.
I felt like the whole bar was staring at me walking out. Huber didn't waste any time giving me shit over what just happened.
"April! WHY on god's green earth did you not grab his hand?! He was helping you up!"
I shrugged as we walked down the sidewalk. "I dunno, I was too embarrassed to look at him let alone touch his hand"
Huber threw his arms up, "You're a lost cause, honey!"
Dixy chuckled while lighting a cigarette.
We continued to walk to my apartment, which was about two blocks from the bar. On the way Dixy, Huber, and I just chatted about work. We got to my house and I turned to look at them. "See you Monday?" I said with a smile. They both nodded and hugged me, and then set off. We all lived within walking distance of each other, it was pretty nice this way.
I made my way into my place and was greeted by my dog, Rowen. She is a Red Husky with blue eyes. My pride and joy and my best friend besides Huber and Dixy. I went straight to the counter and there was a note from the sitter, who was also my neighbor, saying that she had already let Rowen out for the night and fed her. Thank God, because I am tired.
I looked at Rowen, "Bed for us!" I said happily, as she raced for the bedroom and hopped up on the bed. I had a splitting headache- which then reminded me of why. I shook my head and I changed into my pj's. "How fucking embarrassing was that" I said angrily, getting under the covers. I scoffed before turning out the lights and falling asleep.
