Skylar jerked awake due to the crashing coming from the kitchen. Bangs from the cupboards could be heard and clanging glasses echoed through the house.
Skylar sat up in bed and listened to the noises, catching her parents talking with her keen hearing. They were using a hushed but angry tone, perhaps they were trying to hide their quarreling from her.
'They're fighting again.' She thought.
Quickly she shook the thought away to prevent tears from coming to her still closed eyes. She sighed and cautiously dropped onto the floor. She almost lost her balance and had to catch the bed post just in time.
She stayed there for a second to regain her balance and sense of location before stumbling and feeling around for her dresser.
She had just moved in to this house a while back so she was just starting to figure out where everything was. They had moved because of the fights her mother and father were having. They had found a counselor that would help them cooperate and get along in harmony once again.
They tried to cover it up by saying that her father found a new job and wanted to get to work more easily. She didn't buy any of it. She may be blind but she wasn't stupid.
She fumbled around trying to find the hair brush she abandoned last night. She finally found the familiar handle of her brush and immediately started pulling it through her long,sandy-colored hair.
After all the tangles had been sorted through she set the brush down and walked over to her desk, where she remembered setting out her clothes the other night.
She had a system of clothing so she knew exactly what she was wearing. There were little tags her mother had made that had brail writing on it. So when she was picking out her clothes she could just feel the tag and match the clothing.
As she was pulling on her plain sky blue t-shirt she wondered again what blue looked like and why it went well with black. She pulled on her foot-less black leggings and her socks wich were black as well.
She finished dressing and finally made it into her bathroom wich was next to her desk. She touched the mirror, the counter, the bathtub, the toilet, felt the rug beneath her feet before finally turning on the sink faucet.
She splashed her face with cold water and opened her eyes. She turned of the water. She dried her face on a hand towel on the counter.
Sometimes she hoped that whenever she opened her eyes first in the morning she would magically be able to see. But of course that never happened but it was a reason to wake up in the morning.
'Not today, maybe I'll see tomorrow.' She thought hopefully but woefully.
She carefully felt for her toothbrush and put toothpaste on it. Skylar then put it into her mouth and thoroughly cleaned her teeth.
And by thoroughly I mean thoroughly. Skylar was a very neat girl. She had all her books into place and every paper she had was filed.
After her morning routine her alarm finally went off signaling that it was the time she was supposed to wake up. She groaned in annoyance and felt around before gently turning off the alarm.
Skylar knew what was next. She had gotten dressed, brushed her teeth and woken up properly. She had to go face the day and world.
'Another day....another pain...'
She twisted the doorknob of her bedroom door and pushed it. The door creaked on old hinges making Skylar cringe away and jerk back her hand.
She walked through the doorway, feelings along the walls. She eventually made her way into the kitchen where she could hear her parents still talking but it sounded like they had stopped fighting. The aroma of pancakes and bacon wavered in the air and grew stronger as she sat down at the table silently.
