It was that time of the year again where food was becoming scarce and our family had to hunt for food for the winter. I was awoken by the sound of my parents chatting downstairs and the singing of my brother in the shower. I happily lay in bed smothered with the warmth from my blankets and I was planning to stay that way until I heard the sound of heavy footsteps coming up the stairs and into the hallway.
I jump out of bed and run behind my door. I stand there as silent as I possibly can while the sound of footsteps get closer and closer until I hear a creak from the floorboards as they finally stop in my doorway. I hold my breath as a figure of a man appears until he suddenly turns around and grabs me by my shoulders. I scream while the man chuckles under his breath.
"Found ya kiddo!" He says in a deep, yet husky, voice.
I start to laugh then hug my father as he gives me a pat on the back.
"You excited for today Peter?" He asked me still chuckling
"Sir, yes sir" I reply saluting.
We both start to laugh a little when suddenly another figure appears in the doorway, except this time in the form of a women.
"Good morning ma" I say smiling
She responds with a smile then walks over and hugs me.
"Good morning sweetie, breakfast is ready when you are. Also, can you please tell your brother to hurry up" she says gradually raising her voice as trying to hint something, then walks back downstairs.
My father turns back to me.
"You get changed, I'll take care of Michael"
He messes up my hair then walks out to go and tell Michael off for taking to long in the shower. I put my hands together and raise them above my head, stretching my arms then walk over to my cupboard to get fresh clothes for the day. I jump from shock as I hear my father's loud voice instruct Michael to hurry up and get out of the shower.
"MICHAEL! YOU'VE BEEN IN THERE FOR OVER FOURTY-FIVE MINUTES SO HURRY UP AND GET OUT ALREADY!!!" Yells pa from in the hallway.
I chuckle a little then go back to finding fresh clothes when I hear a small knock on the window from what sounded like a small rock or pebble. I never really caught my attention at first but the second time it did. I scuttled over to my bedroom window and cautiously looked out to see a non human shaped figure standing below. A figure taller than any human I've ever seen but largely well built.
It had somewhat pointed ears and raging red eyes. Suddenly the figure moves onto all fours then runs off into the woods. I quickly fall back onto my bed and attempt to make sense of what I just witnessed. My thoughts are suddenly interrupted by the sound of my brother's voice.
"Hey bro, you okay?" He asks with a concerned look on his face while dressed with a towel around his waist, preventing me from seeing something that I would rather not see and holding a bunch of clothes.
I shake my head to get rid of my thoughts and reply to him with a small nod.
"You sure...?" He asks with a worried tone
As soon as he realises that I want him to stop asking about it, he tells me to turn around so he can get changed.
"So, you excited for you're first hunt today?" He says from behind me while putting his clothes on.
