Now my way of drawing is kind of weird because to be honest I don't use guidelines at all. But I know a lot of you guys do so I'll make a short tutorial of how to draw a head shape.
Remember this is a sketch! Meaning draw your lines very lightly!
The basic:
1. Draw a nice round circle. You can use a compass or some round object but I recommend practicing free hand so you won't always have to need the help of other materials. This circle measured as 1 inch (2.5cm) in diameter if you want to follow my scale exactly.
2. Draw a string line down the middle and and have it go off on the bottom by 9mm. At the very end put a little "V" looking mark at the bottom. This will be the chin.
3. Now extend the chin a little higher. Add lines curving in on the sides of the head to start forming the general shape.
4. Connect the lines and smooth out the intersection to create soft cheeks. Add two curved lines starting from the middle of the jaws of the head and make the neck. The neck shouldn't be too long. The shoulders just slope down slightly to give a "relaxed" pose affect.
Now this is where my drawing is weird. So when I ever reference photos, I think of every part as a shape. What I mean is to make sure my face is the right shape I try drawing this:
Do you notice how this shape fits into the head? I always practiced free hand drawing this specific part alone to get a feel for the face shape. I'm not sure if this helps but this was how I did it.
This is the finished product.
