I too once started out by simply making covers that weren't really that good. I mean i absolutely loved them but other people...not really. So I tried and tried to make better covers but somehow i just didn't have enough options for making cool cove...
So i don't really use that many apps in the covers and all of them are free...so it should be easy for everyone to get these apps.
So i use:
1) PicsArt.

This is a really really really good app for editing the pictures. It allows to add effects, correct a picture, blend pictures, draw stuff and some more . My covers use this all the time.
2) Phonto
So this app is amazing when it comes to the text on the cover. Without this, i can't make even one cover. I suggest you get this.
3) Background Eraser:

This app is awesome when it comes to erasing the background of a picture. It is extremely simple to use and has an auto option too. It makes it really simple. I use this in almost all covers. You really need this app.
4) Picture Resource
So you can all choose any app you want to get pictures. I use Pinterest since it has several really amazing pictures. But any other app such as WeHeartIt, Tumblr or any place ypu want to use is absolutely fine.
