Ryn scuffled down the cobblestone road, clutching her basket and keeping her head down. Even though it was mid day, the streets were quiet and empty, except for the guards lurking on every street. Their faces were stern, armed with rifles as if they were going into battle.
Ryn remembers when the streets used to be full of life just a few months ago before stricter rules were enforced. If you wanted to just go and have fun, Main Street was the place to go. Main Street seemed to be the only escape people could have to forget about the king's oppressive ruling. There was singing, dancing and people laughing and telling jokes and playfully pushing each other around. That was all gone now. Main Street was barren except for the stern faced soldiers and the few people who walked the streets, only outside because they really needed to, keeping their heads low. When you go outside, you can already feel the tension that wasn't there before the soldiers came.
When the king placed stricter rules on the land, one of the rules required soldiers to guard the streets to make sure (literally) nothing happens. There's a now a limit on how many people can be on a street at a time, so some rarely go out now. To Ryn, it isn't much of an improvement as it is a curse.
What caused the king to order the guarding of the streets were two things. The first was the riots and protests going on against the king. To be honest, not many of these occurred, maybe one or two, never violent - just a lot of shouting - but apparently it was enough to add to the already 100 mile long list of rules.
The second reason why the king placed these rules on the land was because of Adventure Lady. Adventure Lady was added life to the town, often being called the Mother of Rebellion because of what she did and believed in. Most people in the town before thought a woman wasn't capable of doing the things Adventure Lady did. She wore a long, black cape, a musketeer hat with a buckle and a big feather sticking out of the top, a white ruff, a mask to hide her identity and a wonderful gleaming sword she held. Often seen at night, people would spot Adventure Lady jumping from rooftop to rooftop, her dark cape blending into the night sky. The next day, people would talk about them spotting Adventure Lady, telling everyone about what she was doing. Adventure Lady was soon known all across the land, so famous the even the king heard of her and told his soldiers that if they ever saw Adventure Lady to arrest her immediately.
But that wouldn't stop Adventure Lady.
Ryn kept walking, her hair hiding her eyes who were searching around, as if trying to spot something. She could see never ending ocean; the only thing blocking her between them was fence with rope. If you were able to jump over the fence - that is, without getting stopped by a soldier - it would be a 10 foot jump before you would hit the water.
She finally reached her home towards the end of Main Street, scurrying in as if wanting to escape the tension of the outside world. Ryn's house was just as humble and the same as the other houses among the streets. When you walked in, a fireplace was against the wall on the left, a desk on the right, a timy kitchen in the right corner and so on.
Ryn sighed, leaning against the door and brushing her long, brown hair away from her face. She set down the basket she was clutching next to the door, not wanting to deal with it right now.
