During your teenage years, you're always feeling feel self conscious about the things that your parents or any family member will say in front of people. Well, there's this guy that I've know since I was little, but since he's a bit older then me and more mature I wanted to kind of impress him. It all went well, talking and hanging out from time to time.
Knowing that I'm an Arab, and every Arab mother likes to talk about "embarrassing" things that has happened to their children, the cultural aspect hasn't died down and it was bound to break somehow, but not I didn't know when.
It all happened on New Years Eve 2014. I'd just finished Year 7 and had just arrived into my teenage years. My mum and his mum were sitting down, gossiping and having a few glasses of wine. My mum stared talking about how I was one of the late ones when it came to "wetting the bed". In fact it was true, it took me until I was 6 or 7 years old until I could actually go with a full month without wetting the bed and that I was ashamed of.
The guy happened to be sitting across from them when my mum mentioned my experience, and let me tell you the look on his face was priceless. He had grin mixed with a smirk on his face, trying to hide the laughter. As soon he was able to talk to me, he was teasing me the whole night making it to be the "The Most Embarrassing New Years Eve".
It wasn't as bad until the joke died down and then he finally confided and said that he was also one of the late ones. Hearing those words was like hearing the words "Don't worry, I haven't started the essay too." A flush of relief crept over the embarrassment and annoyance and even though Lebanese parents are embarrassing, they also somehow make you gain confidence and get used to the sorts of things that happen in everyday life.
