The sky above me was dark and the ground beneath my feet seemed rugged. As I looked around, I realized my surroundings were no longer familiar. Glancing behind me, I saw only a large cloud of endless fog. When I looked forward again, the image of a broken city was before me. Trudging forward, I knew I had to cut back on my drinking or at least find the idiot who drugged me last night, but there was no way of telling who was to blame. In fact, trying to recall the events of the previous week, let alone night, seemed impossible. One moment I was in San Francisco and now here I was in what looked like a modern day, poverty stricken Narnia. A loud ringing in my ears confirmed at least one fact. Two days earlier I really had witnessed an explosion that left my family dead and me terrified of what was to come. As the ringing in my ears became nearly unbearable, I stumbled over to the closest building in the slums of this city's downtown, or so I guessed. However, as I neared it, I soon realized how deceiving the first glance was. A poster on the wall seemed to be advertising a twenties themed event but when I looked at the date, it shocked me further. Apparently this place was well into the year three-thousand but at first glance it seemed to be trapped somewhere between the twenties and sixties. Trying to retrace my steps, I suddenly realized I couldn't remember anything between now and the accident. I had to stop drinking tequila. Although, there was another theory, but it was just a legend whispered among those in organized crime.

It was said there was a place off the grid, in a realm all it's own. The way appeared to the weary, broken and unsuspecting to welcome them into a place frozen in time. Rumors flowed that the only law was the mafia's and the Don decided the fate of all citizens. The other side to the legend was that it was a terrifying place to be a woman. All rights that women knew didn't exist. It was supposed to be a man's world, but no one could ever prove the existence of the tale. As children we were warned that if we didn't behave we would be sent off to Dakarin, for they say a child's fate is determined by the parents before they are even born and the orphans end up cleaning up the scum of the more fortunate. However, as I said, it's just a legend and this place had to be all in my head.

Leaning my back against the wall, I closed my green eyes and inhaled sharply. The crisp air cut through me with surprise and seemed to freeze my crimson locks that hung over my shoulders. Suddenly, I wished I was dressed more appropriately. Despite the long pair of designer jeans hugging my large rear and the black sweatshirt zipped up in an attempt to hide my large bosom, the cold felt like ice on my skin. My black, knee-high boots clicked against the pavement as paced nervously in anticipation. I wasn't going to find any answers tonight. Pulling a gold lighter from my pocket, I lit a cigarette in an attempt to help suppress the feelings that tried to surface. All it took was one drag to instantly put me at ease. First thing was first, I would have to find a place in this town to spend the night.

"Heya toots! Why don't you come on over and make it worth my while, eh?"

Glancing over my shoulder, I stared in confusion at the man who called out to me. He stumbled off the back steps and unsteadily walked towards me. Aside from the fact that he was clearly drunk, it took a moment for it to register that he thought I was a hooker. I couldn't see why, until he stepped into the light. He looked to be a couple years older than me, putting him at around twenty-five. However, the gray suit he was wearing confused me. It was business classy, but accompanied by a matching fedora. The watch on his wrist looked like a Rolex, but also appeared to be much nicer. In accordance with his state, it had to be a gift, but not from a woman, perhaps a boss. One thing was certain, I couldn't stay here.

"I believe I gave you a order, whore. Now come here and-"

"No!" I snarled, jumping back as he reached for me.

"Playing hard to get, eh? I...I like feisty." He laughed as his words slurred together and he grabbed my arm. "Now how about you get down on your knees and do your job?"
