The rain echoed through the cold air of the basement. The concrete walls made it easier to travel to me and keep the bitter chill of the outside inside trapped with me, a thin sheet was balled up around be wrapping my wintery body trying to keep me as warm as possible. The pillow felt lonely for where the cotton once filled t was now missing. A slight drip of a water bead hitting the hard floor where a small puddle began to gather, it was a night like this where I would not shut my eyes but the growing heaviness of my eyes forced them closed eventually leaving me to slip into a dullness. The lingering footsteps above me kept me slightly aware of myself while I slept. it went on like this for hours until at one point at the night, it went silent.
The vexatious buzz of the electric alarm clock that sat on a low footstool I used as a nightstand brought me back to my attentive self. As I pulled my arm out from under the sheet the brisk air crashed and grasped it like a bite from jack frost himself. After turning the buzz of the clock off the repetitive drip of the water bead dripped and echoed filling the room once again with its presence. A terrible shiver explored up my spine after my exposed feet met the blistering ground. This greeting was normal to me, though. Standing up holding the sheet around me trying to salvage what heat I could as I searched for the clothes id wear today. After getting dressed I made my way up the metal spiral staircase to the old creaky wooden door. It's loud shriek from pushing the door open traveled through the house. I drew back from the door taking a deep breath then continued very slowly. The door creaked but quieter and less obnoxious.
The bathroom stung my nose from the stench of cigarets and vomit. The floor had a few vodka and whisky bottles scattered around explaining everything. The slight hiss of the faucet from the sink held for a few seconds until water started falling our, it was cold so I cupped my hands together and put it under the messy stream of the water. its frozen touch filled my hand with its icy feeling. I closed my eyes and put my hands up to my face and let the water travel down my face and neck then returning back to the sink. I rubbed my face with my cold hands then placed them on the counter top looking at my dark brown messy hair. my green eyes now filled with awareness, there was no sign of sleepiness. Throwing the shower curtain to the left then turning the smooth nob of the shower releasing the water letting it glide across the bathtub floor. Pulling up on the diverter and watching the water come to a stop. I hear it travel up the pipes in the wall to the top shower head then fall out. Feeling the warm water trickle down my back made me feel like a heating blanket was placed on me. It felt so nice I could stay in there forever but if I were to use up all the hot water, a punishment would be set so I force myself to turn the water off and get out.
The once dull but now bright red light on the coffee pot lit up as it slowly powered up. Afterward, I threw my books and papers into a jumbled up pile and threw into my bag zipping it shut. The enlighting aroma of the fresh coffee soon traveled to the dining room which means it would soon reach my sleeping mom and step dad. My real dad now lived in Detroit and as for me and my mom, we lived in a small unknown town called Boyne city. it wasn't much of a city to me but it was home after all. I rushed to gather everything and hurried out the red front door. My hand glided down the rusted side rail as it bobbed back and forth with every step. After walking down my block to where the trees hid my house I pulled out earbuds and put one in my ear as the other hung from the collar of my shirt. Reaching into my jacket pocket and pulling out an outdated hand-me-down phone unlocking and opening my Mp3 player app opening the My Chemical Romance folder. I scrolled down a few song and put on "famous last words" slipping my phone back into its original place and started my way to school. My salvation away from home.
The grass had dew across the top like a glazed coating, it shined as the sunlight peeked out through the clouds and trees. The day began to get brighter as my destination came closer. Four songs now went by as a faint outline of the building called Boyne city high stood. A small group of kids was already there which meant that the doors were still locked. I slowed my pace not in the mood to make new friends with anybody there. When the doors finally did unlock a crowd of kids was huddled around like a pack of hyenas around a fresh kill with plenty of scraps to go around. I made sure I was the last in trying to be as slow as possible letting all the others pile in one by one. The floor shimmered at it was freshly waxed over the weekend and the new lights over the mass of kids meeting made it glisten. my locker was at the other end of the school so I had to dodge all the kids regrouping from last when they saw each other.
My locker was at the end of an empty hallway wish I requested for that reason alone. A sigh escaped my lips as I put my combination in and opened up the metal door. As I hung my backpack on the hook in the locker I felt a pressure on my shoulder, I spun around with my guard up ready for anything but all I found was matt. matt was one of the people in this school I actually enjoyed to call a friend instead of an enemy. "at ease soldier" matt said with a smile "what's got you so jumpy this morning?" I shook my head releasing a sigh of relief "Just the usual matt" I said as I turned back taking out my books and closing my locker facing him once again. "so got any plans this weekend?" matt said excitedly like he had something big to tell me. Even if I did have plans this weekend it would consist of being the at home slave doing everyone including my own choirs. "I don't know, that depends on my parents," I said with a shrug as we started to walk to our classes. I don't even know what I was saying, for me to keep his hopes up like it was a possibility was as bad as the truth. "Well you should talk to them cause I got the bike I told you about!" he said with now extream excitement and I will not lie the excitement started to build up in me too but I hid it like always but with him being friend with me for as long as we have been he knew that I was just as filled with joy as he was. "Really! good for you man. ya ill talk to them but for now, we gotta get to class" I said letting a smile show as I stopped at my class. his class was two halls down so he still had some walking to do but he always finds a way to get there in time. "Alright ill talk to you later!" matt said as he ran down the hall only having seconds left to get to class as I also made my way into class.
the first hour was Spanish for me. The Same old boring experience of not knowing what the hell the teacher was saying half of the time. Most of the day was normal, same classes, same seats, same asshole kids. After the bell rang and the class cleared out I was always the one last out cause the last place I would want to be is home but there is nothing I can do about that. After grabbing my stuff from my locker I started on my way back home. When I came around the corner of the house the slowest of my mom on the porch was on our old rickety bench. She had a sweet slime and looked happy as can be. You see my mom was so nice and loving to me at times, at other times I also thought that my mom and drunk step dad was meant for each other. The day was like always, go home, clean, do what my parents told me and looked like a happy family.
It rained again that night as it often did, the same haunting echo of the free droplets of rain outside mocked me with their freedom as I was locked away in the basement. They bliss and hatred of the water mixed and fought in my mind, calm yet unsettling, peace yet hate. In my mind there was no difference to these words, they were all the same. I laid there that night listening as my mind had a full on war inside me. The rain finally let up giving me my clear mindset until the water made its way through the crack in the roof. The one thing that I was hoping to go away has now entered my only safeguard from it. I could see its movement to the end of a pipe as it started to build up then it came back. The droplets from the night before started to fall into my room onto the floor once again creating its small civilization as a puddle. as more of them joined the puddle they made sure I knew they were there. the noise of them falling echoed, again and again, torturing me...and they didn't plan on stopping.
