It's Just the Beginning

The sirens rang out, ringing faster and faster, when all of the sudden they stopped. Like always, we had to wait five minutes before leaving the safety zone, but today we weren't going anywhere, anytime soon.

Earlier that day the Zombies threatened to bomb us with nuclear bombs. Which would mean killing almost anything and everything that wasn't in or that didn't make it to the safety zone.

If you did make it, you'd have a 25 to 50 percent chance of living, as the percentages are very low. Getting bombed would mean that everything will be radioactive, the ground, our crops, our animals, and our water supply.

Today our lives will be changed forever, because the Zombies kept their promise to bomb us. They launched six huge bombs, one for each continent, excluding their territory. The Zombies are creatures that have a huge tolerance for radioactive substances, in fact that's exactly what they eat.

Back in 2021 there was a huge bombing where the Zombie territory is located today. It poisoned their food, the ground, and the water they bathed in and drank. They wanted more territory, and if we didn't give it to them, they would bomb us to get it with force, most thought they were bluffing, but they obviously weren't.

Quite a while passed before we got the "clear" signal. We opened the doors slowly, aware of all the dangers. Our world was a wasteland, everything had a dull yellow glow. The air smelt burnt, and was thick. Every time you took in a breath it felt like you barely got any air.

Everyone looked around, to make sure everyone made it to the safety zone. Sadly, not everyone had, and one of them had some relation to me. It was my best friend, Zach. He laid on the ground tightly gripping his sketch book. The look on his face was unlike any I've ever seen, it was a sad and scared look, as if he knew he were going to die right there. The blast had been too much for him. Looking down with tear filled eyes, I picked up his sketch book and began flipping through the slightly now glowing light green pages.

I fell to my knees, and dropped the book beside me and cried. I had never lost anyone I was close to before since my parents had died, and this pain was unbearable. I stood up with rage and anger, then I picked up Zach's limp body and went to be anywhere to be away from here. I had to spend some time with Zach before I buried him. Quietly I whispered to him how much I'd miss his silent jokes and how he always had his face in that sketch book, drawing an amazing piece of art, and told him how much I'd miss him.

So now I'm walking to God knows where and have no idea how I'm going to fend for myself against radioactive hounds, or Zombies that had invaded. I laid Zach's body down and took off my hoodie and laid it over his face and sat by him, and told him how much it meant to me to have a friend like him. Then I got up and went on my way, taking his sketch book with me.

Having no idea where I was going, what I was going to do, or what I was going to eat, I may as well have died right here, right now. Slowly breathing in the thick, hot air, I sighed softly and thought if it were just Zach and I, he wouldn't let me give up. He'd know exactly what we'd do. I looked at the once blue sky and turned around to watch the others sob, and mourn for their lost loved ones.

I had no family and no one would notice I was gone, so I decided to forge on and go where I feel I should go.

After walking for quite a while, I had no choice but to drink some cloudy, radioactive water from a stream. I later found an old cave, laid there, and slowly fell asleep breathing softly, thankful my body was taking the new energy it felt very well. Breathing slowly, I finally lulled my body into a light sleep
