Chapter 1 – The Shadows
Of The TribunalLaw and OrderThat morning, Tancredi donned his tunic and the necklace bearing the Scholars' Insignia: a double helix, twined in a perpetual embrace, opening up at the top to signify endless opportunities. His quarters did not differ from other rooms in the scholars' building: spartan, essential, and devoid of any mundane amenities.
He looked at himself in the mirror. A young man with the first hint of a timid goatee stared back at him. His black eyes burned from an inner flame and reflected the depth of his credo and faith.
Tancredi raised the hood over his head and smiled. The words of his mentor at the Law School still lingered in his mind: "The Law is exception-less, a necessary regularity among the occurring and observable properties in all planets. The galaxy is mostly a messy place where many forces are simultaneously at play and unobservable entities and processes govern much, if not all, of what happens. Exception-less regularities—as the Law is—are the exception, not the rule. Our duty is to make the exception-less the only meaningful rule."
