Out Of My League
Chapter 1
Caleb's POV
"Everyone shut up so I can tell you my plan." Brennan shouts and the room suddenly stops chattering and an eerie silence fills the basement of his house.
I look around at my high school baseball team who is seated around waiting anxiously to hear this years plan on how to beat Lincoln High School's baseball team. Each year, the softball and baseball teams from the two high schools in town come together and play a game against one another. Its a huge deal here. You lose, you're shamed the rest of the year and the whole next year until you play the same game again.
It's my senior year and my team plans on beating that other team, no matter what it takes. I, on the other hand, is a little hesitant.
"So this is what I'm thinking," Brennan claps his hands together. Everybody's eyes are glued onto Brennan, waiting to hear how we would win this year. "Alex Mitchell." He smirks.
Some guys whistle and smiles grow onto other's faces. I watch as everyone mumbles something about her. Alex was easily the hottest girl on Lincoln's softball team, not to mention they're starting pitcher and one of their best hitters.
"She's a hell of a player." Brennan continued on.
"With a fine ass!" Someone called out. Everyone started laughing while guys gave him a slap on the shoulder. I rolled my eyes.
"That's all her head is in. Softball. She's practicing constantly and is at almost every single one of the guys games." He explained.
"So how is Alex going to help us win this year?" Luke interrupted.
Brennan smiled. "She has to know who the guys starting line up is. Maybe even some of their plays. If we get one of us to go over there, ask her on a date, make her fall in love with you, and make her tell you the guys plan or just anything about them, then we could easily win this year. We'll just strategize off of what she tells us."
The whole entire team nodded and approved of his plan. I scrunched my eyebrows and gave my head a little shake. The whole plan was totally wrong. Using a girl like Alex just to win a stupid game wasn't right.
"So who's the lucky guy, Brennan?" Luke shouted out again.
Instantly, Brennan's eyes shot to me.
"Caleb," he gave me a nod.
All heads turned on me as I straightened up from where I was sitting.
"Me?" I asked, an eyebrow raised.
Brennan nodded his head. "Your name is Caleb, right?"
"I-I don't know man," I stuttered. "I don't think that's the best idea." I shrugged my shoulders and looked down at the ground.
"Aw, c'mon Caleb!" Everyone grumbled.
"If I got the chance to go out with someone like her, I would take it in a heartbeat." Luke playfully slugged my shoulder.
I reached for the spot where his fist made contact with me and rubbed it.
"But don't you think this plan-" I started but was interrupted.
"Dude," Brennan stood up. "You're the hottest guy in the school and you know it. You've got girls lining up the hallways, drooling over you. Everybody wants you Caleb and I'm sure so would Alex." He flashed me a smile.
I didn't reply. I just stared at the ground. This was so wrong. I'm not the type of person to use someone just to get something I need. Plus, think about the amount of drama I would cause. A Lincoln High student and a Jones High student dating each other is practically illegal in this town. That's how bad the rivalry is between us.
"Don't you want to win your senior year? Don't you want to leave high school on a good note and not have to put up with the torment of losing against Lincoln for the rest of your life?" Rest of your life? That's bull shit. Brennan's persuading was really getting on my nerves.
"If you don't do this, you'd sorta be letting your entire team down." He went on.
The room went silent. Everyone's eyes were on me as they waited for my reply. I nervously drummed my fingers on my leg, pondering on what the right choice would be.
"Fine," I sighed and looked up at Brennan.
"I'll do it."
