Another day waking up to the smell of wet hay and cow pies. What a wonderful way to start my day. I guess I forgot to closed my window last night, but the pounding of the rain on the tin roof of the barn was soothing. I finally had a full night of sleep thanks to the drowning melody of the raindrops, so the smell was a small price to pay for peace. As usually though, once the rain stopped, the voices came rushing in. Usually I can control the voices, but lately some reason its getting harder to control. Its like when a hurricane comes through and breaks a leevee. The water does not stop rushing until the leevee is fixed. Well my mind isnt getting fixed anytime soon. A knock on my door broke the silence that I was enjoying.

" Dalton, please wake up. You have your chores to do and then you have to get ready for school"

" Ok Sarah, I'll be down in a minute"

I know what you are thinking. Why is a guy like me voluntarily living on a farm with random people? Well when you are being hunted for having a gift, and your family were taken, you really don't have a choice. If it wasn't for Sarah and her son Bailey, I would've died from a bullet wound. I owe them my life, so we made a deal. I get to stay with them, as long as I help with the farm, and go to school. At first it sounded like a good trade, but then i saw how big the farm was. 50 arces stretches across green hills. We lived in a small 2 story white house on the tallest hill. Go figure. Everyday i walk about 5 miles just around the farm before school.

Ten minutes later, I decided to go ahead and get to work.  The closet seemed like a mile from my comfortable bed, but I managed to walk over there. I put on my white T-shirt and blue jeans, you know the typical farm boy work clothes. Usually Bailey starts the chores before I wake up, but his thoughts indicate that he is still asleep. Bailey, Sarah's son, was skeptical about letting me stay, but we gotten close over the past months. Especially since i know something about him. Note to anyone who decides that they want the ability to read minds, no you don't. I decided to let him rest, so chores here I come.

My blonde hair looked orange in the light of the morning sun. I scooped the hay up with the pitch fork and placed it in the rusted wheel barrel. This was the last thing I had to do before I can go grab a shower. Feeding the cows was never hard, in fact it was the easiest thing I had to do.  Once the hay wheeled over to the cow pasture, all I had to do was dump  the barrel. I loved seeing how simple the animals lives were. No thoughts, no worries, just times to eat and sleep. I was walking towards the small little farm house, when Bailey was stumbling out of the door. Now how do I describe this short, scrawny, shy farm boy. Wait I think I just did, but I forgot to add in that he has hair as dark a the night sky.

" Why didn't you wake me up you jerk!", Bailey exclaimed with a bit of anger.

" You were sound asleep, and I didn't need your help gathering eggs or feeding the cows. Now if you are done yelling at me for making your life easier, I'm off to take a shower"

Man, I love making him mad. It was pleasing to me. Now some of those words he thought of calling me was unpleasant. I may have to get him back somehow. Now living on the farm for six months isn't all that bad. Sarah always makes a huge breakfast, just for the three of us. Before any of you ask, I don't know where Bailey's father is at nor do I ask. I asked once, and it seemed like I hurt Sarah really badly. Oh and dont ask Bailey. I tried that too. He just shut down completely and tries to avoid you for a week. Anyway right when I walked through the door the smell of buttermilk biscuits and bacon filled my nostrils. Sarah was in the kitchen listening to the morning news, which in the small town of Bostwick, wasn't much.

"Hey, I'm going to take a shower. Make sure Bailey knows that we are leaving at 7:00. We can't be late today like we were all last week"

"Ok Hun, but please go easier on Bailey. Apparently he is getting bullied again and he wont talk to me about it. I think they are making fun of him having no......father"

It was hard for Sarah to even mention that bailey had a father, but I knew that she was wrong. I know that Bailey is getting bullied, and confronted him about it. The truth is Bailey knows about my abilities, but not Sarah. The only reason why Bailey found out is,  because I confronted him about a secret that he never told anyone. I made him swear that he could never tell his mother.  In return he made me swear that I wouldn't tell his mom the real reason that he was getting bullied for.I also had to swear that i wouldn't get involved, but it was hard for me not to. Especially since Bailey is like my brother.

The cold water felt good against my bare skin. people don't understand that the morning sun is still hot down in the middle of nowhere. The water helps me concentrate on suppressing my power. This is why I take two showers a day. I dont know how it just does. For some reason the sound of water pounding against a surface, makes the voices go away. Usually I think about that cute girl from geometry in the shower, but for some weird reason I saw my parents. It wasn't like a vision, but a memory. a tall guy with a white beard told my parents that everything will be fine. The memory shifted to the day I lost it all. The images were all so vivid. The blood, the screams, and of course the white coats. At that moment I dropped to my knees. It was way too much for me to handle right now. I can't relive them taking my parents away from me. Apparently I was screaming, because Sarah busted through the door and wrapped a towel around me. I heard Sarah's thoughts but i couldn't see her. I couldn't see anyone. I just felt the shower turn off but water still ran down my face. I was crying.

" Honey just calm down. Everything is going to be alright"

I never wanted her to see me cry, so I stood up and covered myself. She doesn't need to know the truth.

"Thanks Sarah, but I think I just saw a spider. can you please tell Bailey that we are leaving a bit early. I have to finish a project before first period"

'Sure Hun, but if you need anything...."

"Just call you, I know and I really appreciate all you have done for me"

Sarah just smiles at me and walks out of the bathroom and that's when I bursted in tears. I heard what she was thinking about the whole time she was in here with me. Sarah, this sweet harmless lady, thinks of me as her own son. I just can't handle this feeling anymore. My throat was inside my stomach. I felt absolutely horrible. After school today I have to tell Sarah that I can read and understand people's thought. Wow and I thought the birds and the bees was a hard conversation. Well I hope she can handle it.
