Josh stood at his front door.
Taking deep breaths as he shakily took his key out of his cackys to unlock the door.
Then as fast as he could, he deadbloted the door and ran like a mad man to his room.
There he closed is door sighed in relief and quickly took out his new record to hide under his mattress. Just after his new prized possession was stowed away he heard footsteps coming up the stairs.
As fast as he could he flung a history book on his desk and pretended to be intently studying every word. Then he heard his mother bang on the door to announce her prescence because Josh gets scared when she unexpectedly pops up.
"Josh, why are you studying history when you should be doing some of that math extra credit to bring your grade up?"
"Well, um i...uh I don't know im s-sorry mom"
"And ask your dad to help you with the geometry parts" she said in her completely too loud voice as she sat on his bed.
All the color had drained from Josh's face. His mother had sat on his bed, where his new beautiful record was. She had figured that out too, pulled the record out as she was screaming at the top of her lungs about how this was the music of the devil and then stalked downstairs.
Josh thought she had gone to call his dad, but soon she came back upstairs with a rosary, bible, and cd player in her hands.
"When will you ever learn child, that you can't do whatever you want and still serve the Lord"
Josh usually cried when she said things like this, but he wasn't thinking. He felt removed from the world. He tried to remember the last time she had tried to teach him to do what she says through their faith instead of harsh words or his dad's belt.
This seemed better to Josh because he gets to pray a lot at school but its hard to focus when he's as nervous as he is at school.
At home he's afraid of his mom and his dad and sometimes anxieties of the future can creep up on him but his mind is a little clearer and he can pray more about things that matter.
So he gladly takes the opportunity to pray. To pray about his new record, to pray about freedom of being scared, to pray that his mom won't make a big deal out of this to his dad.
It feels clear. But not as clear as it does in the record store or when he listens to his secret songs.
Later that night Josh's dad is home and Josh's mom and him are fighting. Again.
"They always fight. About bills, about me, about the cat, about parties, about other people, even about they eat for dinner." Josh says to himself.
Then he hears the backdoor click. Josh's dad must have gone out for a smoke break and with the fact that his mothers screaming was getting quieter, she must have followed him.
Josh bolted out the front door as quietly as he could to not wake up his siblings and went straight for the trash bin. He grabbed his new record then ran back inside and up to his room.
Then as his parents came back inside he hid under his covers the comforting drum beats and and guitar solos lulling him to sleep.
