"I don't want to be sorted."
Those were the first six words of eleven year old Isaiah Robinson said to the wizard and two witches in his train compartment.
"What do you mean? Don't you want to find people that have the same qualities and interests as you?" the witch with auburn hair asked.
Isaiah shook his head. "See. That's just it. I don't want to be in a house full of people just like me. I don't want to be 'just another Hufflepuff' or something."
"My family wants me to be in Ravenclaw," the witch with jet black hair said. "But I don't really want to study all the time. Do you guys think they'd be mad if I was put in another house?"
"Probably," the dark eyed wizard said from the corner. "Wizarding families are known for that."
"I want to be a Hufflepuff," the first witch announced. "By the way, the name's Amy Charles."
"I'm Blake Goodes," the wizard said.
"And I'm Sylvia Jones," the black haired witch added. "I really hope I'm not in Ravenclaw."
"Well, my name is Isaiah," he said. "And I think we should go on strike for being sorted."
"What?! We can't do that!" Amy exclaimed. "They'll force us to!"
"There you said it. They'll force us to," Isaiah repeated. "We shouldn't be forced to do anything! Especially not be defined like that."
"What will we even get out of this?" Blake asked, skeptical of the whole idea.
"Well, for one, Sylvia won't be sorted into Ravenclaw," Isaiah began. "Secondly, I think everyone has a little bit of every house in them. So instead of embracing one of your qualities, why not embrace them all? We can attend classes with the other houses and go to the quidditch games to cheer on people we know and like."
"I'm in," Sylvia announced. "I will literally do anything not to be subject to studying all night long."
Blake shrugged. "I just don't see what's so great about this."
"Listen, Blake. Do you want to be a stereotypical child? A loud Gryffindor? A nerdy Ravenclaw? A stoner Hufflepuff? An asshole Slytherin?"
"Well, no, but-"
"Well if you're sorted into any of the houses I just mentioned, then you're gonna be stereotyped. They're always telling kids to be themselves, yet they force us into categories of what we are like," Isaiah replied. "Stick with me, and you'll never have to deal with that. We'll be our own sort of people. Not the same."
"Huh. I guess so," Blake murmured. Then he threw up his hands. "You know what? Hakuna matata. I'm in."
Sylvia, Blake, and Isaiah turned to Amy.
"No way! I want to be in Hufflepuff! I don't care if they call me a stoner!" she said indignantly.
Isaiah shrugged. "Suit yourself."
