One day, forty three special children were born suddenly. They were born out of mostly single mothers who had shown no signs of being pregnant. Sine there had been no pregnancy, of course, these children were special, having special gifts that no other child had.
These children have special and unique powers. Sir Reginal Hargreeves found seven of those children and took them under his wing, being unable to find the other 36 special children, which most of those children were given up on adoption or abandoned and who knows where they had ended up. He raised them to be superheroes and their code names being as simple as numbers. Ever since they were little they were taken out on patrol, but Number Seven was never able to help them because she wasn't 'special' like the others, so she whenever she asked why she couldn't help them Sir Reginal Hargreeves (The Monocle) would tell her that she wasn't special like the others and he would send her child to her room to play the violin.

Gerard walked across the filthy empty streets. It had been eighteen years since the mysterious forty three kids had been born. He always wondered why The Monocle hadn't found him. He was able to find seven children, one of them without a gift, and yet he hadn't found him. Sometimes Gerard didn't want to be part of The Monocle's Umbrella Academy because he had heard of how unloving and careless he was with the children, but other times he wished he had been found so he could properly control his powers. He didn't use them much, he had a very extraordinary gift but also very powerful and he was afraid to loose control. That happened once, and that resulted in big explosions and the accidental death of his only friend. He swore never to use his powers again, but sometimes he felt the urge to light up and use them, but he never did, fearing something bad could happen. Ever since his friend died he decided to not talk to anyone. If someone approached him he would stay silent and ignore them, not wanting to get close to someone because being around him was dangerous.
The eighteen year old sighed as he remembered the consequences of the use of his powers. He lit up one of the fags from his package and enjoyed the cancer-threatening stick of mixed (nuts) chemicals. He breathed out the smoke, enjoying the taste of it. He knew he could die from it, but he didn't care. He was a freak and he had no friends, he kept it that way. Anyone that wanted to get close to him he would immediately shut down and not speak to them. He wanted a friend. He wanted a friend really bad, but he also didn't want to kill his friend once more. His mind wondered so many things. What happened to the other 35 children? Were they alive? Were they dead? What if he found one of the others? Sometimes he even wondered a very hopeful thing; what if I learned how to control my powers? Those questions would always race through his mind everyday, almost every hour, whenever he was people the questions would pop up on his head.
It was already getting dark so the young adult decided to go back 'home'. This place was all he has ever known. After being born and given to adoption a woman adopted him and raised him for five years, but when she was cognizant of the child's abilities she abandoned him, cursing the poor five year old as she ran away from him. He had to learn to survive on his own, and he did learn very fast, he was a young boy after all. The first place he found was an old and abandoned basement. He had been living there for the past thirteen years. He sighed as he returned to that place once more, hoping that one day he could find a good family and some friends.
This night he pondered over the fact that he should actually go to the Umbrella Academy and learn to use his powers. He didn't really want to go due to the fact that they were basically a family and he would be an outsider, he didn't want that. He also didn't want to go because he didn't like them. He thought they were all snobs living in a fancy mansion and he didn't like them, specially that Spaceboy (originally called Dr. Darwinist) monkey guy, the leader of the group. He sighed for the last time of the day, closing his eyes slowly drifting to sleep, wondering once more if he was ever going to me able to control his powers.
