“It was all good until we reached high school.” Her voice hardened and the smile faded away. “They shifted early and became demi gods to the humans. I was left behind as easily trash kicked to the curb. They shifted during the summer and at first it wasn’t all that different. Sure, they had training to do because one day Daniel would be Alpha and Trent would be Beta. They took on that older, sexier look possessed by all male wolves. We still hung out though, we were still best friends. Then came high school and it all fell apart. We’d never been popular before and they were just so enchanted by the thought of being on top, they forgot they left me behind. That was when I first started to not like them. I didn’t hate them yet, I was just hurt and didn’t understand.” She paused for a long moment, seeming hesitant to go on. I reached out and touched her arm.

“What happened to make you hate Daniel so much?” I noticed her hostility was centered more on Daniel than Trent.

“It was at a party. I didn’t usually go to parties but I don’t know, when I heard Daniel and Trent were going to be there I guess a part of me hoped we could reunite. How stupid I was.” She broke off again, staring out the window shield. When she continued her voice was clipped and bitter. “Next thing you know, we’re all over each other in some dark bedroom and my clothes were laying on the floor. That night Tinsley, it was the best and worst night of my life. I gave myself to him only to find out the next day that he had been drunk out of his mind and that it meant nothing to him.” She took a deep breath trying to compose herself but when she continued she sounded like she was fighting back tears. “You know what sucks, for as long as I can remember I loved that boy. I remember being six and telling my dolls that he was my prince. I remember when I was twelve and I would get butterflies whenever he so much as looked at me. I remember dancing around my room the night after the party after we…I thought that if he’d slept with me it must have meant we would be together or something. No such luck there. That night literally destroyed me Tinsley, he ruined me. I would probably still be locked in my room under my blankets wallowing in self pity if Tyler and Johnny and Liv and Kane hadn’t been there. They picked me up and put the pieces together. I owe them everything.” She stopped, collecting herself, and then turned and faced me, open honesty on her face. “I know I sound like a paranoid bitch when I yell at you for so much as thinking about Daniel, but I see a lot of myself in you. I’ve seen girls get eaten up by his lies and they stupidly do exactly what I did only to be kicked to the curb. Trust me when I say he doesn’t care about anything but the next time he’s getting laid. So now that I’ve told you my pitiful love story, believe me when I say all I feel towards Daniel West is hatred.”

I believe what she told me. Well, everything but the last sentence. I’m very good at being able to tell when someone is lying about something and the subtle glitch in her voice when she said she hated Daniel told me otherwise. As much as she’d like to deny it, that isn’t the only thing she feels for him. What the other emotion is, I don’t know. I can only say for sure that Kayla definitely has some unresolved feelings for Daniel. A nagging voice in my head however kept repeating one phrase in my mind. There’s a thin line between love and hate.

Needing to focus my energy on something and get away from the stress of my mate and all the drama that comes with him, I turned back to Kayla and asked her where my favorite place in the world is.

“Do you know where the dance studio is?” I asked, knowing my eyes were sparkling with the thought of being able to dance soon.

Unknown’s POV:

“Have you found her?” I boomed to the cowering man in front of me.

“No-no sir, we haven’t.” He stumbled over his words.

Anger flared up in me. Raising my hand, I swiped at him, knocking him clear over to the other side of the room. I stalked over to him as he struggled to get back up, clutching at his wrist that was bent awkwardly. I leaned down and he stiffened, sitting still. I’ve heard my grin is chilling, and seeing the fear in his eyes as it slowly stretched across my face reinforced that belief. He flinched as I leaned in closer so that my face was directly in front of his, a smile still displayed.

“You know I’m a very impatient man so I suggest you do so quickly.” I  waited for the words to take effect in his mind and knew they did when he started nodding his head frantically.

“Yes, yes sir we will find her soon.” He said quickly, barely pausing between each word.

“Good. You’re excused, now go.” I told him, walking back over to my desk. “Send Marcus in!” I called as he scrambled out the door.

As I waited for my Beta to come in I talk a long look at the three pictures displayed on my desk. The first one displayed a five year old girl with blond hair and bright blue eyes. Her mouth was stained red from the strawberry she was holding in her hand and she was grinning widely, laughing at whatever was behind the camera. Next to it was a picture of the same girl only it was taken from a far away a few years later, when she was around twelve. We were so close that time, she was right there and then that pesky brother of hers sensed something was up and she was gone the very next day, stolen away in the night. The last photo was of a young man, early twenties with strong features and cool grey eyes. He did not smile.

“What?” Marcus called dryly as he walked in and plopped himself down into one of the brown leather chairs sitting in front of my desk.

I rolled my eyes but said nothing about his lack of respect. We grew up together, he knew me when I was a nerd and a loser. He’d seen me at my worst and now at my best. There’s never going to be any respect from him and if the roles were reversed, it would be the same with me. It would just be weird to cower down and call the guy that used to eat glue “sir”.

“I need you to push them more to find her. More threats, more punishments. I don’t care. It’s been ten years! Ten years and we still have no idea where she is.” I growled, letting my frustration show.

“Cool your balls. Her and her brother know how to cover their tracks. It’s going to take time.” I glowered at him for his genitals quip.

“Time Marcus? Time? Try ten years.” I grumbled.

“We’re close, don’t worry soon enough she’ll slip up and we’ll find her. Then everything will be complete.” Marcus soothed.

“Good.”

“I have been thinking over one thing though. How are we supposed to get her to come and agree to the terms?” Anger once again ignited a fire in me and I stood up, knocking my chair over in the process.

“I don’t give a fuck whether or not she wants to do anything! I will destroy everything good in her life one by one until she comes begging on her knees. Her parents were foolish and stupid not to agree to the mating. It’s what got them and their entire pack killed. Like I said, it doesn’t matter whether she does or does not want to mate with Adrian. She will!” I bellowed, my face turning red in the heat of my anger. Marcus sat as unaffected as ever.

“Like I said before, calm your balls.” He spoke calmly before smoothly standing up and slipping outside.

I righted my chair sat down, taking another look at the blond girl in the picture. Yes, she is going to make a very good mate for Adrian.
