Boy's Point of View
I stood beside a tavern. I'm hungry. I'm thirsty. I'm lost. What's my name? Where are my parents? Where am I from? When am I from? I need to survive. I see a bread vender across the street.
My conscience is telling me NO! But my stomach is telling me "oh, yes." The old man sat with his walking stick. I need food. My dirt covered hands twitch.
My stomach grumbles, breaking my train of thoughts. The old man gets distracted, and looks down the dusty streets. I haven't seen a speck concrete or pavement anywhere. I look down at the direction. I see a group of seven walking down the streets. The 18 hours, 6 minutes, and 54 seconds, I have been here, I have not seen them.
I shake my head quickly, ridding myself of the thought. My attention is soon focused on the bread again. I look one more time to make sure he wasn't looking again.
I slowly sneak over to the vender. I feel the rocky dirt under my feet. I was ready to make a run for it. He was still staring. I silently reached out. My hand was so close, then the vendor whips his head towards me. "What are you doing you thieving scum? Get," he says. I was to petrified to move. "Get, before I whip you," he says. My heart raced.
My mind said "go", but my feet were planted to the ground.
"You sure do want that whippin', don't you, boy," he says. He grabs a nearby belt. Why he had it nearby? I have no earthly idea. Then he whips it hard at me. He strikes me on my out reached hand. The sound echoed through my mind. I stood there for 24 seconds before reacting. I hiss and I yank it back forcefully, feeling the pain. I look at my hand and see a red mark where he struck me. All of a sudden I hear from behind me, "Who do you think you are whippin' my son like that?"
"He was trying to steal," the old man explains. That's when I realize they were talking about me. I turn around and look at my savior. He was tall. He had on a brown hat. Underneath his hat I saw dark brown hair. He had chestnut eyes that looked of trees. He had a chisel chin and a strong jawline. I recognize him from the seven people that the elder man was distracted by.
"No, he wasn't," the man simply explained. He looked down at me in concern. He smiled at me softly. "I told him to go ahead and get the bread and that I would pay for it," he says. He is an amazing liar. For my standards, anyway. As I discovered yesterday, I am not.
"This your father boy," he asks me. "Ye-Yessir," I stammer. My lying skills obviously need some working on. "Here since I whipped him take the loaf for free," the old man offers. For some reason, my heart seemed to melt.
"Thank you, sir," I say quietly to the old man, as I take the loaf. All I could do was stare at both the elder man, and the way younger man, who saved me from a whipping. I was in the wrong. I was trying to steal. I was hungry and selfish. Maybe that old man had a family he had to feed, and that piece of bread, just cost him and extra dollar that went into feeding his kids, or grandkids, or wife.
I looked sadly at the loaf. It laid there in my dirt covered hands. I feel extremely guilty. I felt like the guilt was going to make my heart explode. The younger man looked down at me.
"Come on, Jacob," my savior speaks. Once we were far enough, I turn to him.
"Thank you, for helping me, even though I was stealing. You didn't have to help me, and I appreciate that you did." I say. For some reason I did not cower, like I usually would. I stood tall. My fear did not immobilize me in this situation.
"No problem. Where are your real parents," he asks me. The question racked my brain for all of 7 seconds, before I express my answer through my shoulders. I shrug.
"Where do you live," he asks me. I shrug again as yet another question racked at my brain. "What's your name," he tried, giving a confused tone to match his look.
"I have no idea. I only know how old I am," I explain softly.
Who am I? I stand there letting my brain try to figure it out quickly. The result never came. So we stood there for a total of 19 seconds before he comes to a conclusion that I obviously remembered something else.
"Surely, you remember something else," he spoke in disbeliec. Yes, I did. That doesn't mean I wanted to tell him. But maybe he would have the answers to everything.
"Can you keep a secret," I ask after contemplating for 12 seconds. He nods eagerly. Then something in my mind says, "Never tell an eager person what they want to know." Like it was my conscience. Or an old lesson that I learned in the past. I ignore that voice, because I wanna get home, or discover who I am. Something's telling me that he knows how to help me. I decide to tell him the only thing that is in my brain, or memory. "Yesterday, I was in 1998. Now I am here. I don't understand why the only two names I can remember are the Time Masters and someone named Vandal Savage," I tell him, looking for some hint of realization. Ding! I saw it in his facial expressions. My suspicions were confirmed by his next statement.
"I think I know the answer to your problems. Would you mind coming with my crew," he asks me. So it is his crew. He must be the leader. What is it, a gang? A type of force. What?! "Okay," I say tiredly. I need a place to sleep fast, or I might go to sleep standing. Sleeping on rocky roads is not easy. I had 1 hour, 43 minutes, and 29 seconds of sleep last night. Not all of it was because of the road. It was cold, and to quite. But the main reason was that I can't remember anything.
I just wish I could remember. A face, a name that was personal, a smile. All I know is feelings, and the little voice that wasn't my own in the back of my head. He sounded older. A father? A mentor? Maybe an Uncle? I don't know. I look down at the forgotten loaf of bread. My heart filled up with guilt again. A part of me considered going back and telling the truth, and taking the whipping. But like always, I am to coward.
I bite the guilt filled bread slowly. That was the best tasting bread EVER! This only made me feel even more guilty. No doubt he made this from scratch. It was the best, though I can't particularly remember tasting anything else.
"Come on," he says as he holds out his hand. His calloused yet soft looking hands, indicated that he worked. But not in manual labor. Maybe an architect, and engineer. Yeah he's definitely an engineer. I grab it softly and follow him. His crew were waiting beside the tavern. He leads me back to the other six, who I assumed were his crew.
"Guys we need to get back to Rip," he tells them. Rip? What type of name is that? Granted, I don't even know mine. But Rip? He sounded like a whack job. Maybe that might be a code name. Surely that is not his real name. Rip. I shake my head at the thought.
"For what," a women with long blonde hair says. She was one of the only two females that happened to be there. She was beautiful. She had saphire blue eyes. She tried to give an ominous expression. I could see deeper through that. Her eyes gave off sorrow. Pain. She wants to be in control of something, but she's losing. She's been through something hard. I can't tell what exactly. It was something tragic. Someone's death? She stood almost ready for a fight. Like an assassin.
My thoughts were interrupted by my savior a voice. I'm gonna call him that 'til I learn his name. "This kid was in 1998, yesterday.," the man who saved me earlier states.
What was so significant about that? Besides traveling back in time, and breaking the time space continuum. No biggie.
"We literally just got back, from that damn tin can," another tall guy with a deep mean voice says. From a women's standpoint he was handsome. Rugged, and baldish. But his eyes told a different story. While his unpleaseant demeanor gave off a serious, but in control look, his eyes told a completely story. He was crazy. Not physically, but mentally.
He doesn't know right from wrong. It seems as if he is fascinated by something. Something that brings pain. That's everything but his eyes. His brown eyes told another story. He looks afraid, fearful even.
He flicked his eyes over for less than a second. I couldn't look over quickly enough to see who he was looking at. Obviously, it's someone that he just lost. Not a lover. Maybe a best friend? What he was he afraid of? Maybe death? Maybe he was scared for someone.
"Who's the kid," a darker women with brown hair, and gold highlights, asks. She, like the lighter blonde women, was absolutely gorgeous.
The darker women looked overall happy with a smile planted on her face. But her eyes told me that wasn't fully the case.
She looks as if she just moved on from someone. She has someone else. She flicks her eyes at my savior. He's the man that she moved on to. The man she moved on from wasn't here. She wasn't tense. If the man she moved on from was there, she would naturally more tense. Death is what broke her and her former lover up.
"He doesn't know," the man with the dark hair, who was still holding onto my hand, explains. He looked like a lovable genius. Though it's obvious that some people find him to be slightly annoying.
The man who has a grip on my hand, has also seen lost. He looks as if he wants to hold the whole world on his shoulders, but can't. As if one person died, that would send him over the edge, unlike the other man I paid attention to.
"Where is he from," an older guy with white hair and glasses asks. He obviously had a wife and has been married for a long time. From the look of his face, he loves his wife and has a happy marriage. He seems guilty. Like he hadn't paid his wife enough attention. Did he leave her? Maybe he wanted to be apart of this crew and planned to return as soon as there done with whatever mission they are on.
"The only thing this kid knows is what I told you," my savior explains.
"And I know my age," I tell them softly. My mind kept adding seconds. "I am 12 years old," I say. How long have I been away from home? Maybe I was lost at birth. Maybe I am from 1998. Maybe not. Shit. This is giving me a slight headache.
"I'm gonna take him back to the ship," the man still holding my hand says. Ship. A boat? No. There is no ocean ANYWHERE near their location. He could tell by the comical occasional tumbleweed. Is "the ship" their name for their headquarters? What ship?
They don't even look like they are from here anyway. The older man with glasses, had a gold wedding, with Clarissa engraved in it.
My savior had the whitest teeth, which indicates a toothbrush, toothpaste, and an occasional tooth whitening appointment. Which indicate dentist. Which indicates, an industry that had yet to be invented yet. I shake my head at the sudden thoughts rushing in like I was hardwired to identify people in foreign times.
My mouth speaks, before my brain can stop it. "What the fuck is the ship," I ask as I back away. I just said 'Fuck'. That probably means that I am used to using the language; the way it rolled off my tongue was to flawless.
He looked taken back by my choice of language. He had every right to be. I am a small a small 12 year old kid, swearing. Hell, I was taken back by my language a bit.
"I'm sorry. What is this ship you are talking about? Who is Rip Hunter? Why or how did I time jump," I quickly ask after I swear. He looked relieved at the fact I have a conscience. Some people would just curse and not apologize like they didn't do anything wrong. I don't know if I am that type of person.
It's impressive how well I can read people. People who wear their heart on their sleeve, and some who hide behind masks. I can tell more about someone else then I can tell about myself.
"We don't know, but we will find out once we get back to the ship," he says, still not answering my first question. Or my second. All I could is nod my head vertically.
"Would anyone like to join us," my savior asks grinning for no apparent reason.
I look back at the crew. It took approximately 7.2 seconds of people looking around before someone joined in.
"I'll go," a dark man who looked younger than everyone asks. He couldn't be more than 20. He has a little crush. I can tell. I think it's the women who was in love my savior. He looks hurt. Maybe because she choose someone else? No. That's not it.
He's sad because he hasn't found anyone that he loves truly. He's never felt true love, and he misses someone. His mother? Apart of me can tell he was conflicted about coming with this crew now. But he wants be here, to help. To help what though? What cause is he doing? It obviously involves this crew?
"Come on, until we find out who you are, we will call you," my savior says thinking. He thinks. "Robert," he says. I shake my head wildly. I don't think I look like a Robert. "Oliver," he suggests. I shake my head again. "David" I gave him a 'seriously' face. "Okay. What do you think should you should be called?"
"I like Jacob," I say after contemplating. I look up at him. "Jacob it is," he says smiling. Something about it seems so familiar. Who is he? Why does he care about what happens to me so much? It has to be this impossible to be THAT nice and caring by nature.
"Come on. See you guys back at the ship," he says. I take his hand again, after letting go a bit ago. We begin walking in the opposite direction as the group. I look up at him. Why does he look so damn familiar. "Oh my name is Ray, and this Jax," Ray says. Ray? Ray! Ray?! No, it didn't ring not the smallest bell buried in my head. Neither did Jax. Jax as in Jackson I'm sure. But look I said, not the slightest bell.
"Thank you, again for the bread," I say looking up towards him. I look at the bread feeling less guilty then earlier. I don't know why. Maybe because it was satisfying me in my hunger needs. Maybe because I am a small child and I was hungry. But maybe he had grandchildren younger than me. It's back. The guilt has returned. I feel worse now that I realize that I let myself not be guilty.
"No problem," he tells me smiling. That smile made me feel guilty. It looked so pure for a man of his age. I wasn't worth being saved. I should have been whipped. He should have let him do it.
I take another bite of the amazing, yet guilt filled, bread. I loved the way it filled my belly making it feel warm. But it doesn't make what I had done any better.
I walk solemnly follow Ray and Jax to the "ship". I still have not quite figured out what fucking ship they are talking?
We walk for a total of 7 minutes and 51 more seconds before we stop. I look up from my shoeless feet. We suddenly stopped in an empty field. Why have we stopped here? Is this some kind of cruel joke? To provide a hopeless child into believing you can help him, and rip it away from them,'then laugh at there crumpled up dreams.
"I don't see anything," I state sadly. This was a joke. A cruel sad joke. Then this big hunk of metal uncloaks. It was like nothing I have ever seen before. Well I don't remember seeing anything really, but it was certainly magnificent.
"What the hell is that," I ask used to my language choices by now. 'Don't get on that' is all I hear in the back of my head.
"It's our time ship. It's called the Wave Rider," Jax explains. My observation is confirmed. They are indeed from the future. What year? What is it like where they are from? "Time ship," I ask. The only question that would come out my mouth.
"It will all be explained in a bit," Ray reassures. I quirk an eyebrow at him
By who? Oh, that Rip guy.
I am kinda afraid to meet this Rip guy. How the hell did he get his nickname. Did he kill someone? Everyone has there own skeletons. Even though I may not know my own.
"Follow me, I know the way," Jax says jokingly, in what I believe is supposed to be a Jamaican accent.
I don't understand what's so funny. I look between the two men who seemed to be chuckling. I on the other hand didn't because I was quite clueless.
Ray seems to notice my puzzled look. "It's a quote from a movie," he explains. I cock my head to the side, because that explained little to nothing.
"It's a-never mind," Jax says giving up in the middle. Despite that little episode, I still follow them.
'What are you doing? Your'e going to get yourself killed' I hear that small, deep, sneery voice says in mind. I try to shake it away. It was still there except quieter. So I'll easily be able to ignore it. There is most likely no harm on the ship. My gut tells me that I'll be fine. Even this 'Rip' guy is not gonna try and hurt me. Someone like Ray wouldn't help someone who's dangerous. That's what I feel. And so far my instincts have not been wrong. I grip onto his hand tighter as we approaching the ship. "The Wave Rider," something in my clicks with recognition, but I can't tell from what. We walk to the side. I let go of Ray's hand.
"Are you sure I am suppose to be here," I ask as my nerves get to me. "Yes, Rip won't mind. Especially if it's a child," Ray tells me. I nod slowly, comprehending what he told me. So Rip is the Captain of the 'Wave Rider'. The door opens. I see high tech stuff. Fuck, even the boxes look high tech.
I step on the ship as softly as possible. I feel like if I walk any harder, it would break. Even though, this maybe one of the sturdiest structures ever.
Jax seems to read my thoughts when he says,"It's not mad of glass." I look toward him. I'm sorry I was being a little timid. I've never been on a time ship, before. Well.... I wouldn't know. I slowly gain the ability to walk more normally. The smooth metal making wonderful feelings for my feet. They were dirt covered and small. Tiny pebbles were sticking to the bottom of them. Where I walked, you could see dirt footprints on the clean metal floor.
Everything I saw was grey or sliver. Steel? No. Iron? Some of it. Most of it was futuristic type stuff that I didn't see in 1998.
"Come on, Jake," Ray says. He reaches his hand out towards me again. I quickly grab his hand again. I follow him through the dark halls of the ship. I want to discover every bit of the ship. It's amazing. What runs it? Surely, there is no way that 'Rip' had this crew forever. How did he captain it by himself?
I look up at cameras. They were well hidden. But not for me. I have the eyesight of a hawk. I saw the lens. I keep walking beside Ray. Of course he towered over me.
Almost everyone did. He was, what 6'3? I was 4'11 at the most. My small hand did its best to wrap around his. We walk into a large room. It had several chairs that looked like they were apart of some high tech amusement park.
There was another room behind it. It had globes and maps. They looked like they were apart of a real boat and crew. There was a telescope and everything in there.
