It was 7:34 PM on the dot. Not that I usually check the time but something told me to glance at my phone, so I did. I had also missed a call from an unknown number. Deleted. There was much too much to do tonight.
I strode across the lot of the apartment and into dim night. The streetlights hadn't flickered to life yet so there I was, caught in the place between light and darkness. Oblivion? Purgatory? I could fantasize about the possibility of the lot afterwards.
The darkness did not hide a sharp face peering at me from the doorway of an unlit apartment across the way. The figure's eyes flicked to mine and then away in an instant, he had been watching me. I quickened my pace and found a small stretch of trees and bushes opposite the lot. A fluttering of wings surprised me, a flock of birds. All grey with tiny beaks... except for three that were red. The three of swords. I turned just as a long, thin dagger pierced my chest. Then another, then another. The force of the daggers was staggering. I coughed blood onto the grass and doubled over. The eyes that had been watching me strode over coolly. "Tsk tsk. Mustn't make a scene missy." His voice was like steam escaping a sewer grate, heavy and corrosive. The world spun and complete darkness swept in.
