A little girl, no older than six sat on her bed staring out the window. A small smile flitted across her face. A smile so full of joy that her mother just had to ask her what it was that she was staring at. The little girl turned to her and said breathlessly.
"Don't you see them mommy? The Moonlight Dancers?" The mother looked out the window and saw nothing but a frozen lake. She laughed and kissed her daughter on the forehead.
"Your imagination never ceases to amaze me."
As her mother left the little girl frowned. Why couldn't her mommy see them. They were there, as clear as day. The little girl looked out the window again. The dancers were still there. Their skin glowing with a silvery light. They danced lightly across the frozen ice. They never slipped like the little girl always did. The little girl watched as a flock of small children danced around her window. They clutched each others hands as they giggled merrily, their laughter sounding like tinkling bells. Her favorite, a little girl like her, looked up and met her eyes. She smiled and let go of one of her companions hands to wave. Farther away danced a couple. The little girl thought that they looked a lot like her brother and his wife. He was off fighting in the war. Even farther away, almost in a lake of their own, danced the king and queen. The little girl had always regarded these two with a kind of awe, they seemed older and wiser than the others. Their dance was more complicated than the small children's simple whirling, and the couples slow waltz. From downstairs the little girl heard her mommy give a sob. As she watched the couple suddenly broke apart and the man slowly sank down into the ice. His partner fell to her knees and cried. The children looked over, frightened, and the little girl ran to the spot where the man had sunk. Even the king and queen had stopped their dance to watch sorrowfully. The mans partner slowly stood and wiped tears from her face. As one everyone bowed in respect to where the man had fallen. A bright light appeared where he had used to dance and his partner waved a hand through it before turning and disappearing into the mist. The little girl staid a little bit longer until she was pulled back into her whirling dance. On the other lake the king and queen stood sadly. Downstairs the little girls mommy was still crying.

The little girl, now a teenager, watched the dancers flit merrily across the ice. Her favorite had grown with her. She no longer danced with her friends. They had all disappeared. The teen stared at the second beam of light. This one had appeared when she was twelve. She had watched the children break apart and a girl had sunk beneath the ice. Her favorite had been the one who had cried the longest. An hour later the little girl had been told that her best friend had died in a car crash. The teen turned her attention to the king and queen. They danced but she had noticed that they had slowly began to sink. First their ankles, next their legs, slowly until they were gone. As one the girl and her favorite collapsed into sobs. The king and queen reminded her of her parents who had been killed in a plane crash barely two hours before. She watched as the teen out side stood to her feet and bowed to the new lights that had appeared. The teen watched as the girl outside slowly began to dance by herself.
I'm alone now. The girl thought. Then she remembered the boy that had comforted her when she had cried at a fast food restaurant table. The boy that had told her that he understood her pain. The boy that had given her his phone number in case she needed him. Maybe not as alone as I thought. The girl murmured as she pulled out her phone. Outside a boy had appeared next to the girl and they had began to dance.

The teenager, now a young woman, smiled as she heard her husband cooing at their new baby son. Outside, the young man and woman still danced together and gathered around them danced other couples. New friends. Friends that would last a lifetime. A shimmering light appeared and a baby gripped the skirts of the young woman dancing. She looked down and laughed. Her shining skin gleamed a little brighter.

The young woman, now a middle aged woman, watched as the baby latched onto the other woman's skirts slowly grew and found his own partner. She had watched as three more babies that had once gripped her skirts grew and began to dance with another. After a few years she began to notice a difference, the woman and her partner were now dancing on their own lake, with the others dancing behind them. Crowns rested upon there heads.

The middle aged woman, now an old lady, watched the lake as she sat on her deathbed. The other old lady had been dancing alone for several years. The ladies dance had changed quite a bit from the whirling dance of a six year old. Her dance seemed show how much she had learned over the years, it showed sadness, it showed joy. The old lady smiled and placed her hand on the window. Outside the other lady did the same. The old lady could see the children that had grown all pause in their dancing and turn in their direction. As her eyesight slowly faded to black, she saw the children bow as the other lady sunk into the ice.
