What am I doing up here?
The cool breeze blows my hair into my face and sleeping gown against my back. I look out at the vast ocean of evergreens. The low hums of life echoes up to me from the depths of the forest. Another gust of wind pulls at the ends of my gown, asking to lift me up and carry me to neverland. But my lead feet keep me anchored to the ground. The cold cement of the ledge scratches against my naked feet. I look down at the ground below from the roof of the institution. The fireflies below look like specks of light from the towering building. It has to be a good 30 ft drop, the building is 3 stories anyway.
How did I even get up here?
The institution always locks every exit door after 9 pm, to make sure nobody gets the grand idea of escaping through the night. The door to the roof is always locked too, so the suicide crazed patients can't jump to their demise. So the million dollar question, how the hell did I even get up here? It's as if that memory has been removed from my mind. It's like a blur.
Do it
What, jump?
You know you want too
No!
Why not? I helped you get here
Yeah, to this psychopathic hell. You made everyone believe I was as insane suicidal.
I then feel a sharp sting in my hands and look down in disbelief. To my surprise, they are scratched up and bleeding. I watch as the blood drips off my fingers and splat onto the cement. That could be me.
What did I do?
That doesn't matter. What matter is that I've given you an opportunity
Jumping doesn't solve my problems.
Well rotting here doesn't seem any better. Be grateful you shit
Fuck you.
Well I hope you like security guards
The door entering the roof begins to shake, I hear the shouting of two men behind it. I can't find myself to move, either back onto the roof or over the ledge. Then, the bursts open with two security guards and a nurse rushing onto the roof. They look around frantically until the nurse spots me still frozen on the ledge. She is screaming something but I hear no words escaping her lips.
Jump
Jump
Do it dammit.
I feel myself start to lean back over the ledge. Before I fully lose my balance, one of the guards grabs ahold of my wrist, throwing me back onto the roof. I slam my head against the rigid floor but it doesn't faze me. I can see the mouths of the three adults moving fast, like they are shouting, but I just hear the humming of cicadas as I look up into the sky.
The stars seem to shine brighter here, maybe because the institution is remote in the forest. No city lights to block out the glow of the stars. The forest makes the stars lovely.
Fucking Pathetic
