walking down a half lit street
destinations all unknown
in a hurry to get nowhere
most of them alone
in the distance a petite figure approaches
coming down the foggy lane
no one looks up or takes time to notice
that it's just little “lonely jane”
“hello, isn't it a pretty day today?”
she says to every passer-by
she notices they ignore her
and how they roll their eyes
how they don't even offer
a routine “hi.”
she tries to stroll along humming
on her way back home she goes
to a boyfriend who has always loved her
jane thinking, “how he does, i don't know.”
as far back as anyone can remember
they've all said “what a shame”
“she's such a loner” “no one loves her”
that poor little “lonely jane”
why doesn't he find someone normal,
jane would always ask, knowing he never will
so for as long as the town folk remembers
it's just her & him living up on that hill
and today like everyday
she's been down at the park at the square
that's where you'll find her most days
feeding the pigeons there
little emilie & her mommy
are ahead at the park
they see jane as they start to cross the street
trying to make it home before dark
emilie and jane exchange smiles
but her mommy reaches to pull her by her skirt
she doesn't want her baby to be seen
speaking to the likes of “her”
emilie spots the cutest little puppy
& runs right off the curb
not seeing the car that's fast approaching
lonely jane sees & without a word
she jumps in front of emilie
& throws her safely into her mothers arms
looking back as the car hits her
to make sure she had come to no harm
as the town folks gathered around her
blood trickled down from her smiling face
she said “could you tell my boyfriend
i wont be home for supper
i'm going to that special place”
time will heal & memories fade
life will go on just the same
but today they noticed, if only for a moment
they noticed little lonely jane
