Death is Unfair (Prologue)

It was the first day of college, and I was already 10 minutes late  to my first Army ROTC class. "Bye mom," I yelled taking a few steps out of the doorway.

"Honey, wait!!!!" I rolled my eyes before frantically searching for my bag, then realizing it was on my back. I can be such an idiot sometimes. I went back to the doorway, and stood there for what felt like forever before my mom came downstairs.

"Sorry honey, I had to finish up the laundry," she stated before tears welled up in her eyes, "Oh, my little Jared is all grown up, I wish your dad was here to see this." 'Yea well he died fighting to save the grid from them,' I thought to myself. I know I could be rude sometimes, but the truth was I loved my mom, and if anything ever happened to her... I don't know what I would do.

"I know my, but I need to get going. I'm already late," I stated.

"Sorry, right, you should be getting on your way," She hugged me tightly before bursting into tears. Great. Add another five minutes to being late. Thankfully, she pulled away and wiped her eyes.

"I'm sorry," She sniffled, looking at the ground. I pulled her into a hug one last time before walking out the door. From behind my back, I call out, "Its alright mom." I then proceed to get in my car, slamming the door shut, and revving up the engine. All of a sudden I see something running towards me in my peripheral vision, flailing her arms and yelling. I roll my eyes once more before rolling down my window.

"What is it mom?" I said, sounding annoyed.

"I just wanted to say I love you before you left," mom whispered.

"I know mum, I know," then I pulled out of the driveway, leaving my mom standing there, a stranded expression on her face.

She began to walk inside, a kind smile on her face as she waved at me.

All of a sudden though, I stop dead in my tracks.

A terrifyingly loud gun shot was heard, followed by my mom's screams, and soon she fell to the ground. I hastily opened my door, and ran out of the car, clutching her hand as a single tear fell down her face. She cupped my cheek, and whispered a barely audible "I love you, Jared," before the life completely drained out of her eyes.

I sobbed into her chest, then someone came out of nowhere and dragged me away from her, as I screamed. My mom was simply left there, lying in the doorway, blood pouring from her chest.

This can't be happening, I thought to myself. But to my 18 year old self's horror, this was most definitely happening. And my moms death was only the beginning.
