It had been a week after my mother had told me Karen was coming with her annoying son, Liam.
From what Karen had told her, he sounded like a whiney goody-two shoes. I was definitely not looking forward to having him live with us, even if it was just for a week or two.
And as if him living with us wasn't bad enough, he'd be going to school with me too. Liam was even in my grade. He'd probably try to flirt with Ember and Veronica, and I knew that wouldn't turn out too well. He'd ruin everything.
The only good thing that came out of this 'visit' was my brand new car, which is where my mother and I were headed. My mother had insisted I changed out of my comfortable pajamas just to go buy a damn car. I didn't put much effort into my appearance. I just wore a plain dark purple shirt and dark jeans. My hair was in a tight ponytail, and I wore no makeup. I didn't believe in makeup, it was fucking pointless!
"When we get there, I'll give you a few choices. You can pick out of them." My mom said. Usually I'd argue, but since Rachael came along, I didn't really have the energy. Plus I knew she wouldn't pick out anything too new or ugly.
Her old Chevy truck pulled into the parking lot, and she turned off the heater as we walked into the building.
"Hello, welcome to Randy's Motor Shop. Can I help you with anything?" The man had the fakest smile I'd ever seen spread across his face. His blue polo shirt and khakis made him look like a fucktard.
"Yeah, I'm buying my daughter a car, do you have any suggestions?" My mother asked plainly, no smile. At least my mother wasn't fake like Khaki Boy.
Khaki Boy led us to a door in the back of the small building, which went out into another parking lot full of cars. Most of them were probably from the early 2000s, which didn't bother me. I was lucky to be getting a car, I didn't need to have some $100000 Porsche. They were hideous anyway.
We followed the man down the line of mostly used cars, until we stopped at a red convertible from 2006. I flinched. There was no way I could even picture myself riding in this with the roof down, and 'Paramore' blaring from the new radio.
"How much is this?" My mom pointed to the convertible's sleek, red paint job. Khaki Boy bit his lip and pointed to the windshield, where a price was painted. $6500 wasn't exactly in my mom's price range, so we moved on.
A few more car, that weren't exactly my style, seemed to catch my mother's undivided attention. Every time, I crossed my fingers hoping that they were too expensive. They were.
My mom was in a deep conversation with the salesman about a Ford Explorer when I saw it, the perfect car. It was red, but not like the convertible. This car was a darker shade of red, almost like ruby. It was probably from 1999-2000, but I didn't care. The seats were leather, and the wheels were really cool. I wasn't sure of the brand, but that didn't matter.
"Mom!" I called. Her and Khaki Boy met me in front of my new love, and started discussing all the details as I admired the inside of the car. It was so unique and amazing. I needed that car.
"Lets check the price..." My mom finally said.
This car better be in the price range.
I read the like green paint on the windshield, $2500. That's it! I could get the car.
"We'll take it." And my mom signed the papers as I climbed inside my car.
**************
I watched re-runs of 'Breaking Bad' in my room, taking in each detail carefully. I tried too anyway, I was too distracted. Karen and Liam were coming the next day, and for the first time since hearing about the news, I was more nervous then I was angry. In fact, I was really nervous. One good thing about my parents were that they never really had guests over, and I didn't know how to react to these strangers from England.
