From The Eyes Of Alice
By: Rory Coyne
The life to be dreaded As the sun set the corn fields started to have a tan glow. Peaking through the fields a little black , beady eyed blonde haired girl with a sharp chin. Ran through. The girl had a wide smile. A sheep herder dog ran after the girl, with thick brown fur that if shaved would make a blanket. A voice in the distance yelling "Alice, Alice".The little girl ran up to a old wooden porch. Around a red barn with chipped paint. .A woman stood on the porch babbling about dinner. The night passed and the morning came with a bright sun rise. .Alice would not spend her days at school. Her parents could not afford it, but Alice enjoyed watching the children walk to school the girls in uniforms that had green and blue plaid skirts with a white knitted wool shirt. Alice loved spending her days with Duke the care free dog that she named in her head, but there was one thing :even though his fur his was so soft and his heart was so big she still never said his name. Unsaid and unheard. The next morning with a slow sunrise, a cold wind and a dim fog a letter came. The wax seal as pure as gold, the heaviness and the smell of ground coffee beans. The day had to be something brilliant, but no one knew it yet. To : Alice the letter said in fine jnk. Even though the letter was ONLY for Alice her mother grabbed it and ripped it open. The thick paper shredded on to the floor and suddenly the day was not so brilliant, it was terrifying. In the envelope there was a copy of a will and a fortune for Alice. But not any more . Her mother smiled and kept it. Days went on. Alice in the dark, her mother deciding what to do with the riches. The money smelled like a rainy day in the forest. Then an idea sparked: a house, a car, a better life... it all fell into the right pieces. Maybe the days weren't that terrifying. after all. Alice imaged it to be a huge junk yard up there. With rusty pans with metal and weapons and dirt. Alice walked down old, fragile cobble stone roads her shoes making the sounds of a symphony. Her small black beady eyes flicked at every note. She heard her mother call "Alice, Alice look". Her symphony grew faster, her heart grew wild ,but before she thought she regretted her happiness.
"Is this the new house?", Alice said. After that sentence in Alice's mind she said these very words : but it will never be a home. The house had a musty smell and a room just for Alice. The house was big that is all it was . But there was something about the house: was it the non chipped paint, a room for her own, the extra room for servants or the backyard ? The back yard had an old stone wall with stairs going through it and dry grass. She wondered "What's up those stairs?"The stairs had vines stuck to them and gave her a creepy vibe. The wood railings had splinters and were dirty. The mud stuck to them like glue. Her mother came out and looked in disgust. She thought the yard was small ,compact and ugly. "The yard is small quite frankly", said her mother. .Alice had never heard her mother talk so proper. Alice thought her mother was a dust by now. "But mother it is not that small. Look up those stairs. I bet it is big". everywhere". "What stairs deary?" Alice's eyes opened and her eyebrows crunched "How can you not see these ugly stairs!" ,she screamed. "Alice you are freaking me out! Stop lying," her mother said. "But mother it's there" "Alice go to your room now,"her mother screamed. Running on the floor made sounds that she had never heard in her life. Up the new stairs she ran into her room. The wallpaper stared at her bold and scary. She looked out the window in her room. The glass was so clear that it looked like a hole in the wall. There she saw a rope from the wall and to the house. She had to prove that there were stairs, but without going up them. Out the window she climbed. She crawled like a koala until she slipped ,one hand holding on the drop looked longer a way that it is. Alice yelled, "Help" slowly her brother came out and laughed 'Ha let go it doesn't matter if you die anyway." Just like that all of the words she wanted to say she let go of and herself. She woke up in her bed ,her mother upset "Alice how crazy are you up in the attic? I am very ashamed." There all of her life did not matter to her anymore. She promised to live, but she never promised to be alive. The attic had dust in the air and you could see it. The attic was the entire top of the house. It was small and cold. At night she would sleep on a worn out mattress. It was just like home. On the farm she slept on an old mattress with Duke. Alice thought about these memories as tears crawled off of her eyes. That night she had dream about letting go of being alive, but in the memory she saw a dark figure. When she awoke from this dream she looked in a small dusty mirror and a dark spot appeared on her forehead. Winter came. That spring she felt the same. She felt the same way through every season. The bread she got under her door became two and the water they put in every night stayed the same. One spring day Alice heard a knock on her door. Out her window the sun was bright and the grass was green. She opened the door and they all yelled "Happy birthday!" The musty smell in the house was stronger and all the furniture was new. This did NOT look like her old house. Her only home. The woodwork, the crown molding. It was all weird. The fancy glasses, plates and all the wood in the house had no splinters and was smooth . The paint was not chipped and dinner filled the whole plate.Things were different , very different! Her mother went to fetch something and her brother and father flowed her. This was Alice's chance to go up those stairs ,to leave this life to start a new one so she ran out the door and up the stairs. She took a breath and "Alice Alice" in that moment her heart started beating and all the things she wanted to do she did right. Her brother saw her and then she disappeared. The stairs! She she ran. There she saw a meadow. The grass was green and bright and the sun shined like heaven. There she promised herself she would go find Duke. .Alice looked out at her family screaming her name, but her brother Will wasn't. He just stared at that wall in regret. In the meadow butterflies flew and the smog was gone and Alice was ready for hope happiness and a better life .There she thought she would stop being alive, but just in 2 seasons she was back from the bottom...
