Vanessa and Justin had been dating for a few months when he figured out that something was wrong. That day, they hung out for a few hours before they decided to go out for dinner. They were having fun, so they decided to walk around the block. Eventually, Vanessa looked at the sky and said to herself, "Oh this is not good." She saw the sun was going down. Justin asked if everything was alright but she just said, "Yeah... we better get going it's getting pretty dark." Justin was a little bit disappointed because he was having fun and he wanted to stay with her.

Once they got back to the car, Justin looked up at Vanessa and saw that her eyes were black. They were no longer that beautiful shade of blue that they usually were. He just brushed it off and thought he was imagining it or maybe it was just the lighting. The whole ride back to Vanessa's house was quite. Vanessa didn't even look at Justin, she just stared out the window. When they turned into her neighborhood, Justin asked, "Are you mad at me? I mean, did I do something wrong? Please, just tell me if I ever annoy you or make you mad." She replied with, "What? What would make you think that?" She still didn't turn towards him. "Well, you just randomly wanted to leave and you won't look at me," he said. They pulled into her driveway when she said, "It's nothing about you. Not at all." Justin was confused. Why would she do those things if she wasn't mad? "Then what is it?" he asked. "Nothing important, really." She hopped out of the car with her black purse and headed to the front door.

Justin got out of the car to go after her so they could finish the conversation. Once Vanessa got to the front door, she started shuffling through her purse for her keys. Justin caught up with her and suddenly grabbed her hand. She quickly looked up at him and then looked back down again. "There it is!" he exclaimed, "Why won't you look me in the eyes?" She said, "Justin, I really need to go. Please let go of my hand. I told you, I'm not mad at you, so please, just let it go?" He let go of her hand and waited for her to find her keys. When she finally found them, she opened the door and stepped inside. When she was closing the door, Justin saw her eyes for a second. He swore that they were black and the skin around them was visibly dry. He then watched her through the window to see that she went into the basement. She said no one was allowed down there, except for her dad.

On his was home, Justin contemplated the night. He knew she was hiding something. But what? Was she she cheating on him? No, that wouldn't explain her eyes or the basement. That was the only reasonable explanation. Another explanation could be that she was some sort of monster, but that was very unlikely, right? He wanted to know so badly, but he couldn't bring himself to text her or call or her that night. He knew that she wouldn't give him the answer he wanted. She would just brush it off and say it was nothing. Once Justin got home, he looked up these symptoms; Black eyes, dry skin, doesn't like night. The only things that came up were werewolf and vampire, but he was sure those didn't exist. So he went to bed and told himself that he would try to crack this case tomorrow at school.
