Counting Wishes

"Come on!" I growled.

"Alright.." Mumbled William in a soft, shy voice.

We both grabbed our heavy bookbags and raced outside. The smell of September air tickled against my nose. The bus came to a screeching stop and we jumped back slightly. The bus windows were crowded with hands waving out to the children on the cracked sidewalk. I dragged William up the steps and started pushing him toward a seat without anyone in it. I stopped in my tracks to see a seven foot tall boy with a large grin on his face. He grabbed me by my shirt collar and lifted me up by his sweaty face. His face was covered with acne and freckles. I let out a low growl at him. Then he clenched my shirt collar tighter. William, behind me, walked to a different seat farther away from me, staring at me. My eyes focused on his, bright green eyes. I saw fear in his eyes. I turned my head back to the bully and swung my clenched fist at his face, leaving him being launched a few inches back. I brushed off my jeans after hitting the floor from punching the bully.

I swiveled my head back to William and signaled him to walk over to me. He gently got up and walked toward me. I stepped back and let him sit down at the chair beside me. I sat down after him. William turned toward me and stared deeply into my eyes. I felt my face turn red so I turned my head away from him. I tried to think of cold things, so my face would stop blushing, snow, ice cream, popsicles. When I felt like my face was back to normal I turned back to him. I smiled at him with embarrassment. He gleamed his cute smile that sparkled with braces.

"Jess.." William whispered in my ear.

"Y-Yes?" I replied.

"T-Thank you for not letting that bully hurt me" He whispered to me.

I was talking to my friend, and then when he said that my head flashed back at him. He turned his face toward the bus window. I tilted my head when he was looking out the window. He mumbled something, but it was too quiet to tell what he said.

The bus arrived at school and I rushed out of the loud bus, holding William's hand. I saw his face was turning a little pink, but I just kept walking. My jet-black hair accidently got in William's face, but he really didn't mind. We got to class and I saw backpacks of all colors hanging outside on little plastic hooks. I threw my bag on the dirty concrete. William placed his backpack on one of the hooks and ran inside. Everyone stared at me as I entered the classroom. A few long hours passed and school was over, finally. I dashed home with William and walked him to his house. When I said "Bye" to him, he hugged me and walked away. It was so weird, yet awesome.

A few months passed and it was another, boring, school day. I grabbed my bookbag and ran to William's house and then we missed the bus, it was so frustrating.

"It's all my fault.." Mumbled William, rubbing his fingers through his chestnut hair.

"No it's not." I firmly spoke.

"Let's just walk instead." I said, shifting my bookbag to another shoulder.

"Alright." William smiled.

We walked to school, except, we met up with the bully again.

"Get lost!" William shouted holding my hand.

I stopped holding my "I believe we've met before," the bully added,"My name's Jim." He grinned extending his arm toward us.

William slowly shook Jim's hand with great caution, but then something happened. William fell down to the floor, blood dripping from his nose. I dashed over to him and held him in my tan arms. He felt limp in my arms. I got up after slowly dragging William over to a safe place. I brushed my hair out of my face.
