I can see him. He's at the table near the door. I don't know his name, but I do know he is an initiate, like me, and that he ignites an unknown feeling inside me. He looks over in my direction and smiles,
"Tris you in there"Christina asks me, waving a hand in front of my face.
"Hmm yeah just thinking " I say,
" Sure, that's why you were staring at -ow! " she yelps. I look over at Will, who just elbowed her.
" leave her alone Christina " he tells her.
" Thanks Will" I say.I see my plate. It contains food that I haven't seen before. Christina must see me eyeing my food, because she says " haven't you never seen a hamburger before?"
"Well," I say. "I've seen one, I've just never eaten one" Will smiles, and hands me a tiny bowl with red stuff in it, saying " Try this on it Tris".
"Ok?" I say as I pour some of the red stuff on top of the hamburger and then bite into it. It's different, but i like it. "mmmm what's the red stuff ?" I ask as I swallow . - " Ketchup "
"its good" I tell him . I can tell they're both enjoying my ignorance over food, but as Christina is about to say something, Max starts yelling over the crowd. Max is faction leader.
" Initiates stand" Max yells. As we get up I sneak a look over at Mystery Boy's table. He's standing, just what I thought. Max is saying some spiel about something.
"You have chosen the warrior faction, but we have to choose you now. At the end of initiation there will be ten slots open for new members."
This is not what we were told.
"There are ten transfers, and twelve dauntless-born. Do the math. The strongest and most determined will get one of the ten slots, there will be ranking to decide this. Training starts tomorrow. The first stage is the combat stage, the transfers and the dauntless born will be ranked separately, but once you get into the simulation stage you will be ranked together. Like I said - training starts tomorrow. So get some sleep".
