Marnie's P.O.V

I slowly open eyes as I begin to fall out of my sluggish trance.  I turn my head to the window and back away as I notice walkers surrounding my car. I sit up and rub my eyes. "So much for a quick nap". I start my car and slowly drive away. My heart still sinks every time I see walkers chase me in my rear view mirror, just knowing things will never be the same.

I role down the window a little bit, so far its been the hottest summer since this whole thing has started. I drive down the highway and begin to slow down as a herd of walkers in the distance become more clear. I squint my eyes to get a better look. "Is that a..." It seemed as if one walker was running faster than the others. It begins to get closer and I slow down. It slams its hands down on the hood and I slam on the breaks. I'm taken back once I finally realize its not a walker.

Carl's P.O.V

I've gotten myself in deep. I told my dad I was ready to go on runs by myself and he finally agreed with me. I went through the woods instead of following the tracks as a short cut but I realized it was a mistake once I walked past a herd of walkers eating the remains of a deer. I tried not to make any noise and sneak past them but I stepped into a hole and fell backwards. They all turned to me and stood up. I was frozen and outnumbered. I pulled my gun out of the seam of my pants. "Damn it", I was out of bullets .

I stumbled off the ground and ran back towards the road. The herd kept getting bigger, 15, 20 by now. Once I got to the road I stopped to catch my breath but it wasn't long until walkers began to pour out on the other side of the woods. I stumbled back to my feet and ran down the road heading back towards Alexandria.

I was starting to get tired as the walkers begin to gain on me. "Is that a..." a car in the distance begins to get closer and closer. I run in front of it and put my hands on the hood. Its a young girl. She slams on the breaks and her eyes get wide. I take a breath of relief. She just saved my life.

I see her reach over and grab something out of the passengers seat. She steps out of the car and points her gun at me. I lift my hands off the hood of the car and close my eyes. I hear a fire and a body fall behind me.

"Get in" she shouts as she shoots a few more approaching walkers. "Come on!" she jumps back into the car. I run around to the passenger side and jump in. She reverses the car and turns around then slams on the gas trying to get as far away from the walkers as possible before slowing back down.

Things were quiet as I try and regain my breath. I glance over at the girl. She looked no more than 16. She had long brown hair that was pulled back into a ponytail and dark blue eyes. I could tell she'd been on the road for a while by the way her skin and clothes carried dried mud and blood.

"What?" She asked not even looking at me. Her face was serious as she closely focused her eyes on the road. I looked away and felt my face heat up. "Thank you for saving me back there". She didn't respond, just kept her eyes on the road.

Marnie's P.O.V

"Thank you" the young boy said. I stayed silent. I glanced over for a moment then went back to the road. I can tell he had a camp. He looked clean for the most part and he had fresh bandages over his eye.

"How many walker.." he started to talk but I cut him off.

"Do you have a group? Or somewhere I can drop you off so I can be on my way".

He hesitated. "I stay at a place called Alexandria. We have a big group and take care of each other. Food, water, medicine. You can come and stay if you'd like." He openly stated. "It just seems like you've been through a hard time".

"I'm doing fine on my own." I bluntly stated. Why was he telling me all of this? Because I saved his life so hes trying to pay me back?

    "It's safe there..." He paused.

Safe? All I want is safety but how can I trust him.

"If you have a camp then why were you all alone?"

"I was making a run to the daycare a couple miles down the highway" he said, "we were running low on baby food".

"How can I trust you?" I asked

"You can't. You'll just have to take me back to Alexandria and see for yourself".

I remember seeing a couple signs a few miles back pointing me to the direction of Alexandria. I figured it was over run by the amount of walkers stumbling in the woods. We followed the signs for a couple miles until I saw large walls built on the outside of the Alexandria community. Maybe this place really was safe.

"I'm Carl by the way." He said as we pulled up to the giant metal doors.

I finally make eye contact with him, taking in his facial features. He had light blue eyes and long dark hair with a sheriffs hat on. I had to admit, he was the first cute boy I've seen since this whole thing has started.

 "Marnie".
