Lyla James. That's me! I'm your average 20 year old. Except I don't have any friends... and I move around all the time... oh and I'm not exactly mortal. I am but I'm not. I'm a witch, but not the popularized TV type. Yes, I have special "skills" but we don't use wands or tarot cards, or fly around on brooms. Oh, and I should probably mention, I'm not actually 20. I'm 174 years old.
You see, that's why I don't have friends and why I don't stay in one place for very long. I was born in Huston, Texas in 1845. That's where I grew up with my family. My mother and I lived in a little cottage in the woods near town. They didn't really like us, the town thought we were weird and dangerous because we were different. We weren't dangerous. All we wanted was to live and be left alone. Instead we got threatened. Tomatoes were thrown at us when we walked around town, people broke out windows with rocks, it was horrible. We tried to stay and just mind our own business. That worked for a little while but the last straw hit when my best friend left and things got so much worse.
Jasper Whitlock was my best friend. He was the best thing that ever happened to me. We became friends when we were little. He was wandering around the woods one day and came upon our home. He said he was "exploring" but later told me he wanted to see what was so bad about "the witch house". He wasn't like the others, he was nice and understanding and he was my best friend.
I has the most ridiculous crush on him, too. It started when we were 16. It was like one day my eyes were opened and he was the most handsome and perfect man I had ever seen. I didn't tell him, not for a long time. Not until the night before he left.
He left when he was 19. We were fighting the civil war and he felt it was "his duty as an American citizen" to fight for what he believed was right, even though he was underaged. To say I lost it would be an understatement. He told me when we were on a walk. He had accompanied me to the market, when he came with me people weren't so mean, and we decided to take the long way back to my house because he said he wanted to talk to me about something.
That was one day I will never forget.
"Lyla, I don't know how to tell you this" Jasper said looking nervous, his sweet southern draw making my heart beat increase.
"You can tell me anything, you know that Jaz." I said smiling softly and gently bumping my shoulder into his.
Jasper took a deep breath looking around before settling his gaze on the ground in front of him.
"I'm leaving tomorrow"
"Jaz if you're trying to tell a joke, that was a really bad one" I said frowning slightly but trying to keep my voice lighthearted.
He stopped walking and grabbed my arm gently to get me to look at him.
"Ly." He said softly.
My entire world stopped. I couldn't breath. I couldn't think. I froze.
"Ly" he said again.
"Why?" I asked, my voice shaking no matter how much I willed it not to.
"I have to help. No, I NEED to help. The confederates need able bodied men and that's what I am. I can't sit back while they're dyin'!"
"Jasper you can't be serious." I said , my heart was shattering.
"Lyla I have to." I started to panic.
"Jasper, please. Please don't leave. Don't leave me" The panic was evident in my voice now as I grasped his arms.
"They need me, Lyla!" Jasper exclaimed pulling back from my grasp.
"But I need you more!" I shouted. I couldn't help it, my only friend, my safe place, the man I loved was leaving, possibly forever. I didn't know what I was going to do.
"You'll be fine without me, they won't!" jasper said just as loud. Jasper's face softened with regret for raising his voice. He didn't want our last night to be spent fighting.
I didn't notice until jasper reached up to wipe my face that I had tears running down it. I knew that there was no arguing with him. He had made his mind up and that was that. But that didn't make it hurt any less.
"It's not like you'll never see me again. I'll be back before you know it" Jasper said looking into my eyes. His hand was still on my face.
I was about to make what could possibly be the biggest mistake of my life.
"Jasper?"
"Hmm?"
I took a deep breath.
"Please don't hate me" I had made my mind. I may never see Jasper again. It's now or never.
"Why would I—"
I cut him off with my lips. I put everything I felt for him in that kiss. All the love, all the pain, all the fear. Everything. And to my astonishment, he didn't push me away, he didn't yell at me. Instead he pulled me closer and kissed me back. Hard.
What came next was the most amazing experience of my life.
The next morning, he left. And I never saw him again.
