Chapter Thirty Seven

Start from the beginning

“No, I was just making a comment about how camp you sounded. No biggie.” Harry shrugged, as he drove around a roundabout, half trailing off on his words as he drove around the bend until he came to the rightful turn in.

“No biggie,” Louis scoffed, his misty eyes rolling in their sockets, his arms folded across his chest, “Shut up, Elton.”

Harry could only laugh as a response.

“Oh, so I made a gay joke about the one going on about outfits and suddenly I’m Elton John?” Harry replied, a smile on his face as he started to drive through the familiar roads towards the housing estate that Harry and Louis both lived in. Louis only sulked in response, rolling his eyes once more. Harry chuckled once again as he drove towards Louis’ house.

“I’ll probably just wear chinos and a polo or something.” Harry finally answered the question that Louis had originally asked a while ago, sending a sideward green-eyed glance over to the pouting boy. If he wasn’t such a womaniser, then Harry would have thought the boy was gay anyway.

“Me and Andy are trying to get a bunch of the year twelve girls from the girls’ sixth form across Bradford to come. I need to look fuckable, I am not getting that drunk for no reward.” Louis replied, looking at Harry seriously, his lips still in a small pout from Harry’s comment earlier.

“Well, you have a nice bum, so wear something to show that off. I’m sure girls must like a good arse on a man as much as I do.” Harry grinned, teasing his best friend once again, even though Louis had a slight dim moment and smiled to himself, his shoulders shrugging the compliment off coolly, even though Harry could hear the megaphone in his friend’s mind screaming it out once more for fun.

“I’m sure I’ll find something that will make me look sexy enough.” Louis replied, although he was looking down at his nails as if talking to himself. Harry simply rolled his eyes at his cocky friend. Giving Louis a compliment was like giving a puppy treat; they come back begging for more and don’t stop. Harry should have known better than to boost his friend’s ego.

“Oh! You still giving Liam that camera for his birthday?” Louis asked, finally looking up from whatever was so interesting on his nails and looking into the side of Harry’s face. His curious words seemed to drop on Harry like a bomb, and Harry was glad that he had pulled into the boy’s drive so he could concentrate on getting himself out of this one. He couldn’t help but curse the day he’d picked Louis of all people to come with him to buy a camera, which was intended for anyone but Liam Payne.

“Camera?” Harry asked slowly, sending yet another sideward glance over to Louis, who was looking at him with one of his signature ‘don’t be stupid, Harry’ looks. Louis’ eyebrow was raised to show how unconvinced he was.

“Yes. The one we picked out, the one you told me was for Liam’s birthday, the one you’re supposed to be giving to Liam?” Louis replied, his tone turning to his typical matter of fact tone. The tone normally came out in the feathered haired boy’s voice when he was about to prove someone wrong, or was so sure of himself in one way or another. Harry looked at him for a moment, before plastering a feeble smile.

“Oh…that camera. Yeah…” He replied, his voice slightly shaken under the new interrogation from Louis.

Louis’ jaw chewed for a moment as the boy gnawed on some gum, his left eyebrow still raised above the other as if to prove its superiority to the other. Harry swallowed heavily, the irony thick in his mind. Louis’ blue-grey eyes were like a hawk, watching over Harry like he was personally pulling the boy apart to get to what Harry was now hiding. Harry couldn’t help but feel his palms break into a small, humid sweat.

“Have you got some amazing plan using the camera to like, set you both up?” Louis replied, and Harry quickly nodded out of instinct, before the loud rumbling in his mind reminded him of the sweet smile and brown eyes the ruled his head and heart. Harry could imagine the sparkle in those brown eyes when he gave the raven-haired boy the present that he had saved up so much to buy for. He could imagine the beautiful photos that Zayn would come out with, he’d use the camera way more than Liam would. The camera would end up forgotten if left with Liam.

“No…just a present.” Harry spoke quickly, giving Louis a slight nod as if to affirm his plans, yet the misty-eyed boy took it the other way. Louis’ face broke out into a beaming smile.

“You’re such a Casanova, Harry! Who thought a dope like you could think of some amazing plan to get you and Liam together? You guys are actually going to be cute. I give you permission to kiss in front of me.” Louis spoke with a wide smile, ending his sentence with a wink. Harry swallowed once again, his green eyes looking over Louis uncertainly. Only Louis could get all of that from a refusal.

“Louis,” Harry started, wanting to stop the crazy Louis train before it ran off the rails excitedly, but Louis was already interrupting him.

“Don’t worry, Hazz, I won’t tell him a thing! I’ll help, if you like! Want me to buy you both like, er, condoms? Do gay people use condoms?” Louis asked, as he stopped unbuckling his seatbelt and looked at Harry in pure curiosity. Harry gave him a warning glare, completely not okay with how the conversation had ended up, but Louis only wafted his hand in Harry’s face to dismiss anything Harry was about to say.

“Okay, okay, I’ll leave the gay sex to you! See ya Hazz, thanks for the lift!” Louis chorused, smiling widely and jumping out of the car. Harry watched as his friend shut the car door and then tapped the car bonnet, before walking into his front door. Harry was about to drive off when he heard Louis shouting his name once more. The curly haired boy looked back over to where Louis was stood by his front door.

“Don’t forget Liam’s birthday!” Louis yelled, before giving him one last wave and going inside of his house, leaving Harry to carry on reversing from his friend’s drive.

Even if the camera wasn’t meant for Liam, Harry knew he still had to give him a present. Only Louis knew about the camera, and Harry could easily turn around and say that he broke it last minute or found something more interesting to buy Liam instead. Liam would never know that the camera would go to Zayn, and aslong as Harry remembered Liam’s birthday, everything would go smoothly.

And with that, Harry drove back to his own house, wanting nothing more than to eat the BBQ that his Step-Father told him was at home waiting for him.
