Grace Phipps as Evangeline Florence (or whoever you want to picture)

I enter the classroom to my calculus class just before the bell rung. I observe that it is small, no bigger than a small movie theater and there are very few people seated. I take a seat myself and start to absorb my surroundings . The walls around me are very coarse and white, containing no art or pictures. The flooring is new and looks as if it were installed very reciently. Facing the chalk board sit seven rows of desks, about five in each row. There is only one window, next to the door in the back. While seats start to fill with more and more people lingering in, one can smell the sweat dripping off others as they enter into the cool atmosphere escaping from the harsh heat of California.

As the instructor enters, any noise that was in the room is now stillness. Class has now begun. Unlike high school, college students tend to want to learn and progress in their life. That's one thing I've always liked about being in college.

College has also been my escape from the small town I'm from. I was born and raised in Mongolia Spring's, Alabama. A small town consisting of no more then 1,000 residents where everybody knows everybody and no secrets are kept. As a teenager I dreaded living in a small town and was eager to escape into a big city. When I got a full scholarship to Stanford University in California, I was ecstatic. When college started I left my small town and cut off all my connections to Mongolia Spring's, wanting nothing to do with my past and the people in that town. Of course, I kept in touch with my parents, but that was about it.

As the professor continued on with his lecture, I took notes on various things he was saying. The Professor was in the middle of describing how to properly multiply sin and cosine, something we learned in pre- calculus, when the class room door was opened and an officer stepped in.

"Can I help you?" My professor said with a slight edge in his voice.

"I need to speak to Evangeline Florence." The officer responded, unfazed by my professors cold demeanor.

Me? Why on earth would a cop want to speak to me? I'm like the president of the "good girl" club.

I hesitantly stood from my seat and gathered my books, putting them in my bag before approaching the officer.

"Please come with me." He said before walking out the classroom.

I could hear the students begin to whisper as I followed behind the officer, but ignored what they had to say. I was too worried I had done something wrong to focus on their petty gossip.

The officer led into the empty hall and looked at me, his eyes filled with sympathy for some unknown reason.

The tall, lean, brown hair, blue- eyed officer cleared his throat before speaking. "I was told to inform you that your mother is in the hospital. Your father said he tried to reach your cell, but it was off."

I hadn't been able to make enough money to pay for my phone bill. Even after working 40 hours at a nearby dinner, I hadn't made enough. Oh, the glorious life of a college student.

"Do you know why she's in the hospital again?" I asked as I tried to keep my emotions at bay.

"Your father said that her cancer is back." He paused. "I'm very sorry, I probably sound like a dick, but I'm not really good with these types of situations."

He shuffled in his feet nervously and rubbed the back of his neck before stuffing his hands in his pockets.

I let out a small luagh despite the fact that my heart felt like it had been ripped out of my chest.

My mother had beaten lung cancer about a year ago. It was so painful watching her go threw all those chemo treatments. She was so weak and tired all the time, she had just gotten back to normal and now she finds out she has it again. I can't imagine what she's going through.

"Well, looks like I'm going home." I said mostly to myself.
