The wind whipped Katherine's hair around her face, making her skirts billow about her. The massive piece of wood called a boat creaked and groaned under her cold damp feet. Despite the salty wind, the sea was smooth and glassy. The water acted as one giant mirror and if Katherine leant over the railing circling the boat, she would have seen her reflecting back at her. She wouldn't dare to though for fear of falling into the unknown icy world below.
Although Layla's crew were able bodied and fit she quivered at the thought of getting lost, left gliding over this glassy plain forever. The absolute quiet gave Katherine time to think. Katherine wished it weren't , she truly did, but it was too late. She began to remember. Remember what it was like. Remember what it was like to be in someone else's mind. To see what her sister saw. To hear what her brother heard. She had been in both of their minds. She'd been in her mothers mind too. His as well. His mind frightened her. His mind made her blood run cold and her skin to set alight.
In his mind the people cheered. In his mind the people cheered for him. In his mind the buildings burned and so did the people, but still they cheered. In his mind fire was his. In his mind he tamed the untamable. He controlled the uncontrollable. He was fire and he burned. He burned like a thousand suns and shone like a million stars. In his mind blood flowed. Blood flowed through the streets like water in a river, like rain in the sky. It flowed like words from a mouth or ink from a pen. It smothered everything and anything in its part. And she loved it. She loved it because blood was hers. She controlled it. She tamed it. She was its master and it did her bidding. Blood was life. Blood was death. Blood was everything and blood was hers. Blood sparkles like a thousands rubies melted under the sun. It moved like a snake, sliding through water, like a bird gliding through the sky.
Katherine was pulled from her thoughts by the shout of her crew
"Land ahoy!" They called
The sand crunched under the boat as they ground to a stop and her crew scurried to let her off. Finall, she had arrived.
She had come to find him. Together he and she would burn the city to the ground. Together they would take over the city. And the people would cheer, but this time the people would cheer for her. The people would cheer for blood and not fire. The people pull cheer for blood because it would rid them of fire. She would rid them of fire as blood doesn't burn. Blood will smother fire as it has everything else it has come across. And then , once they have cheered, the too will fall victim to blood. Just like her mother, just like her brother and sister. Just like this crew will. This crew will be the first to give blood. Her fathers will be next. Her fathers and then the people.
The people who laughed. The people who ridiculed. The people who excluded. The people who doubted. They will be the ones to cheer. They will or blood won't be the only thing taken from them. They will cheer or she will take their thoughts too. She'll take their minds, the only truly private thing anyone has, the only thing truly private, and she'll break it. She'll twist and warp it until there is no way to differentiate the truth from fiction. She'll take the only thing they have left and look into it. She'll know their greatest fears and their proudest moments. She'll take the good and leave behind a broken, empty shell. So they will cheer. They will cheer for blood because the consequences are so much worse.
