STRANGE HAPPENINGS

Feeling suddenly restlessI got off my bed,walked over to the window and stared.

The sight of the blooming flowers growing just below the window somehow lessened my restlessness.

My eyes ran over the kei-apple hedge that grew around our house.

Acres and acres of a dark mysterious mass consisting of closely-packed trees,undergrowth and other tropical vegetation stretching as far as the eyes could see.

I always wondered if giants roamed in this forest.

How many times had I woven my daydreams around it?

Daydreams?

Stories?

Mare tales created to entertain youngsters like me.

A sudden desire to get out of the room gripped me.I glanced at my watch.It was half past two.

A little nature walk would be good for digestion since I had eaten a few hours ago.

I slipped out of the room.

Without pausing in the living room where my mother and sister sat engrossed in a day time movie.

At this point I was joined by Glarida,my dog.

I walked for a few distance and came to my destination.

I gazed at the forest and found myself slowly,almost drifting hypnotically, moving towards it.

The forest had this magnetic pull that never failed to attract me.

I had never moved deep enough in the forest to satisfy my hunger,to explore it and learn it's deep secret.

One day I would do just that.

It would be risky though,for deep in the forest was a thick darkness and only God knew what would be crouching in wait.

It was so cool and shadowy.A few rays of the sun managed to penetrate the canopy over head.

On impulse, I veered off the footpath and wove my way through the sparse undergrowth.

Glarida followed faithfully.

I was aware I was walking on forbidden grounds which led to a cave where four months earlier, a boy and his sister had disappeared without a trace.

A week-long search had yielded nothing. As a result, the cave had been declared out of bounds to minors.

I was about to break a very important commandment.

"Though shall not visit the cave if under eighteen."

I shrugged in defiance and boldly moved on.

I must visit the cave.

Why not?

I thought.
