Not everyone has been lucky enough to have a grandmother like mine, so I thought I'd share a few things to let you know what you'd been missing.
If you had been lucky enough to have a grandmother like mine, you'd love the smell of hot cooking grease. It would take you back to a warm kitchen in Cameron, La where you sat on tall bar stools, feet dangling, and waited to eat fresh beignets, amazing fried shrimp, or French fries cut from an actual fresh potato. The sound of a piano playing old hymns would remind you of her faithful hands playing during hundreds of church services and Christmas performances, and the smell of a metal and wood would remind you of playing cashier while she worked at Dyson Lumber Yard.
If you had a grandmother like mine, you'd know the importance of afternoon naps and having coffee when company came. You'd know that swinging on the porch swing was the best past time, and your phone call was the most important thing she could have been doing at that moment. You wouldn't be upset if she called you the wrong name, because she simply had to go through the entire list of grandchildren, top to bottom, before landing on the right one. You'd also know that the candy is in the freezer and her rocking chair was the best around.
She was the matriarch of our family. Gatherings revolved around her: her food, her home, her piano, and her Christmas tree. Nothing brought her joy like watching her grand and great-grand children play, and we all know the sound of her voice when she wanted to be mad, but simply couldn't. However, I can vouch that she earned her title "the dragon lady."
Finally, if you had a grandmother like mine, you would have never wondered if you were wanted or had a place to go. Her heart and her home were open, just like her arms when we walked in the door.
