The scratches

We moved shortly after my father had gotten a notice. Our family would have to move in order for my dad to keep his job. He worked at a Theatre as a backstage crew member and my mother couldn't get a job to keep our family on our feet. Nearly a year ago she had been sadly diagnosed with a Lung disease, so we had no choice but to move. My father got enough money to support our small family and to pay the monthly hospital checks.

I knew that I would lose many of my friends, that I wouldn't be able to keep in contact with, since I was moving from the small town of Hedgebourne, Wisconsin to the big city of London. So I was getting pretty lonely on the first day of the move. It took nearly eleven hours to arrive and there was a huge time difference that messed with my head and made me tired.

The small, three roomed apartment that we were moving into was a called the Trumdem Studio Apartments, that owned a series of apartments in a row. Before we moved in, our beds had already arrived and whoever placed them into our rooms, I silently thanked. I was too tired to deal with moving my bed into the new room myself.

I entered the apartment, my dad called out to me to say that he would be going to drop off my mother at an appointment and go the theatre nearby to meet with his boss, and would be home in a few hours. He also had left about 20 dollars on the counter in the kitchen so I could order a pizza if I had wanted.

Soon after using the restroom, I entered my new bedroom that was almost empty. It held just my bed and a few boxes of my items near the foot of it. I gently threw my stuffed, black suitcase full of clothes and other necessities onto the dusty floor board near the door. Laying onto my bed, I began to notice the small features of the bedroom that I hadn't noticed when I first walked in. There was a small window on the one side, which the white paint was peeling off of the windowsill. I covered my face with my hand trying to block the bright setting sun from hitting my tired eyes. I looked over at the bare wall, squinting at the light blue colored wallpaper, I noticed a few scratch marks. They seemed to be marks from a... a cat? The last I knew was that the apartments didn't allow you to own an animal or pet unless you payed a large fee every single month. This particular building however, hadn't been used in several years, or maybe a decade or two.

Not wanting to stress about it any longer I decided to get some rest. I grabbed my fluffy purple blanket out of my suit case and curled up. As I dosed off for what seemed like a minute, I awoke to the sound of shuffling by the window. I squinted at the black figure although it was way too dark and I was way too tired to figure out what it was. Maybe it was just my mind playing tricks on me, after all I had just moved to a different time zone.

So I fell back into a deep, comfortable sleep to the sound of soft purrs.
