"There are no errors," I grinned, "only fate." That was a quote drilled into my head for as long as I could remember.

"In any case," the voice continued, "if the Fates were, in fact, correct, then your human to protect is Maddison Graves."

I felt a slight tug on my chest, which, by my guess, told me where Maddison was.

"Maddison is beginning her junior year of high-school, and thus you must blend in. That being said, you cannot do much without your cloak and weapon."

In front of me, the only things that appeared into view in the inky blackness were a white cloak that was tattered toward the bottom, and a scythe with pure white blade, which was glowing in front of me. The hilt/stick, whatever you call it was made of what seemed to me like blackened diamond. Interesting.

"That's one way to kill a Reaper..." I muttered to myself.

"These are not to be used for murder," the voice said, "They are to be used to protect yourself and your human."

"I know that," I responded.

"Along with these you receive your wings," the voice droned.

"What wha--?" I started, but a searing pain erupted from my back. It lasted for what felt like an eternity, then vanished.

"Whatever you do, do not interact with your human."

Suddenly, a bright light shone in my face and the next thing I knew, I was on Earth.

As far as I knew.

My feet were planted on grass, and there were trees everywhere. A mile or so ahead, I could see pavement and cars.

The city.

I felt the tug at my chest again, and figured I didn't really have the time to go sightseeing in, by my guess, New York. I casually walked over to a building and saw my reflection in the window. I suddenly realized how closely the Inbetween creatures resemble humans. My cloak was already on, covering my straight, jet black hair and my lightning yellow eyes really stood out.

"What was that thing the voice told me?"

Do not interact with your human.

I thought for about eight and a half seconds. Then I decided I was gonna go interact with my human.

"Hmm... this cloak... it needs a bit of...
modernizing." In my seventeen years of preparation I also looked at the mortal world through a shadow of mine every single day, and I may not have been a human myself, but I knew this cloak wasn't going to fly. I was also kind of surprised when I saw a black t-shirt through the gap in the cloak. Normally the Anti-Deaths get white.

As far as I remembered, the cloak multiplied base physical and mental abilities a-hundred-fold. Or something.

I shrugged, taking the cloak off and shaking it a little. In that time span, it became a blank white sweater with a zipper and a small bird on the upper left side.

"Hollister?" I guessed, "Weird."

A warm rush surged through me for a second. By my guess, September, and judging by human standard, the last day of their 'Summer Vacation.'
