Mistake

I held the plastic red cup with both hands, observing the contents of the cup. It was a maple color, with a horrible smell; cheap college beer. Ah, the perks of having a roommate that knew someone in a fraternity. The rather large house was filled to the extreme. People were falling over one other, the overwhelming smell of beer hung in the air mixed with the stench of vomit. The heat was unbearable and there was no where to sit. I kept all my thoughts to myself as I came here merely to please my roommate who wouldn’t shut up about me being way too uptight and boring.

Whispers were going around that the leader of the Fraternity was in search of a one night stand. I knew nothing about him, what he looked like, what his name was. I only knew what the whispers told me. Girls were going all out at the party, looking around to try to find him. The one they could possibly please, the one who could please them…

I’d rather be in my room, reading, studying or sleeping than be here. I had no way of returning home unless I took the bus. Considering it was nearly 3 am, I assumed the buses weren’t running. So I’m stuck here with a bunch of intoxicated college students… I set the cup down on the counter as I passed by and went up the steps that lead to the second level of the house.

I looked around in hopes of finding an empty room to settle in. I opened a few doors and found people piss drunk or passed out inside. I finally found a room unoccupied with a queen sized bed and a dresser with a few books on top. I picked up the first one and found Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone. I took it and sat on the floor with my back against the wall.

After a while, my back began to hurt so I searched for an extra pillow. I couldn’t seem to find one so I sighed and sucked it up. I would have felt awkward to have taken one of the pillows that sat on the bed… I’m assuming a few hours passed before the door swung open violently. My head snapped up from the book that I held in my hands to find a male figure standing in the doorway. He walked in and shut the door behind him before noticing me.

‘What the hell are you doing in my room?’ He didn’t seem too friendly.

‘I wanted to get away from the party…’ I tried to stay calm.

‘Well piss off.’

‘Excuse me?! Who says you can be rude to someone you just met. It wasn’t like I trashed your room or anything.’

‘It’s my room and you aren’t allowed in here so get out.’ He started getting angry.

‘So, you could at least be nicer about it.’ I was standing my ground and wouldn’t let him push me around.

‘Please piss off.’

‘Wow!’ I laughed to myself.

‘What?’ He cocked his head to the side a tad confused.

‘You’re so damn mean that it’s actually funny to watch.’ I smiled a little.

‘What the hell is that supposed to mean!’

‘It means that you’re comical trying to intimidate me.’

‘Oh, I’m not even close to being intimidating. Trust me. Now get out.’

‘Whatever, I really don’t need to be wasting my time on someone like you anyway!’ I had finally noticed the tattoos that covered his arms.

I stood up and placed the Harry Potter book back in its place and left the room. I was getting tired and didn’t want to stay any longer. I went downstairs in search of my roommate but had no luck. She’ll have to find her own way home.

The cool night air felt good against my skin as I stepped outside. I remembered the way here a little but put the address of my door into the GPS in my phone to not get lost. It told me that by foot, it would take me about 45 minutes to walk.

Well, I’d better start now because I had a long walk ahead of me. I pulled my headphones from the depth of my jacket and put on some music to help pass the time. There were few cars on the road considering it was very early on a Saturday morning. A car rolled down the streets and stopped a little bit ahead of me. I kept walking until I heard a familiar voice.

‘Need a lift?’ It didn’t seem as rude as before.

‘From you? I think I’ll pass.’ I wasn’t rude on purpose it’s just that I knew he was someone that can’t be trusted.

‘C’mon! It’s only a lift. I promise I won’t kill you!’

‘Hmm, I don’t believe you so I think I’m okay to walk.’ I turned up my music to block out his voice again.

I still had 25 minutes of walking left. I turned onto another road as the car came into view again. It rolled along slowly. I turned my head only to catch his eye. His mouth moved as he spoke but my music was too loud to hear anything. I continued walking and ignored him. He wasn’t the type of person I hung around with.

A hand was placed on my shoulder and spun me around. Another hand pulled out of the ear pieces that kept playing music. I turned down my music since he obviously wouldn’t give up trying to get my attention.

‘Will you just let me give you a lift? It’s not like I’m asking you to marry me.’ He was trying to add a little humor to the whole situation.

‘Why are you so nice right now but were a total jerk back there?’

‘Because I can tell you’re in need of help.’

‘I don’t need your help thank you very much!’ I spun around and continued my walk.

‘C’mon! It’s not so bad; I’m only a jerk when someone does something I don’t like.’ He said nonchalantly.

‘If I agree to let you drive me home will you stop bugging me?’

He nodded, went back over to the car and opened the passenger’s door, signaling me to get in. I buckled up as he went around the front of the car. He got in and drove off. He didn’t bother to fasten his seatbelt and I rolled my eyes. I gave him my address and it took no longer than 5 minutes to get to my dorm.

‘Well, thanks.’ I felt really awkward because I had no idea what to say to him.

‘Yup’

I got out of the vehicle and went into the dorm hallway. I unlocked the door and went inside. I found pajamas and a tank top to change into.  I was settled into my bed and about to drift off before someone knocked on the door…
