"Alright everyone, dinner is served." Mrs Crenshaw called out after setting the table.
Josh came sliding on the banister all the way down the staircase and settled at his place on the dining table. Lyric followed a moment later still texting on her phone while Gram just watched her two grandkids give their mother a headache. It was her new found hobby. As everyone got busy munching away their food Mrs.Crenshaw's pager started buzzing on the kitchen counter and she went to check it.
"Work emergency again," she said putting on her coat that hang by a post next to the door.
"Oh good, don't worry mum, I'll clear the table and any other chore you want, just go save lives." Lyric said excitedly helping her mum with her coat.
"And why is someone suddenly trying to get rid of me? "Mrs Crenshaw asked surprised by her daughter's eagerness.
"No reason, just being responsible." Lyric shrugged it off.
"Mmmh, ok. Make sure Josh cleans his teeth before bed and don't stay up too long, you got school tomorrow." she said as she clipped her shoes on.
"Mum I'm ten, I don't need a babysitter." Josh defended himself.
"Think you so grownup, try loosing the video games." Lyrics mocked him.
"And Gram, keep them off each other's neck. Love you all." she said walking out.
Lyric slide back in her chair giving her Gram that goody two shoes look she always had on every time she needed a favour.
"Why do I recognize that look? It seems like someone had plans tonight." Gram said.
"Please Gram. I'll be back in a decent hour and ready for school early enough. Mum won't even notice. Please please...everyone knows am coming." Lyric begged desperately.
"If I say no I'll be labelled uncool for eternity and then you'll sneak and still go so, let me save both of us the trouble. You go have fun and stay safe." She said to an excited Lyric.
"Thanks a lot Gram, you're the best." Lyric said hurrying upstairs to her room texting someone.
Lyric: Finally got away, where're you at?
Megan: At my place. Picking you in ten.
Lyric: Closet issue, should I do little black dress or grey leggings and the leather jacket?
Megan: Take the dress. And no boots this time, we ain't going to an icy hike.
Lyric: Heels, what colour?
Megan: Red, the studded ones.
Lyric: Got it.
After about fifteen minutes Lyric walked out and hurried to Megan's car as they sped off. Shortly afterwards they arrived at Luke's party. As always it was booming from the parking lot all the way into the house full of teenagers dancing their feet off red plastic cups at hand. Lyric and Megan joined in the fun and started dancing alongside each other before Brad pulled Lyric to his side.
"Hey beautiful, for a moment I thought you wouldn't show up." Brad said.
"Got caught up a little back there." Lyric replied.
"Is it just me or do you look gorgeous in that dress." Brad complemented her.
"Why thank you, you don't look too bad yourself." She said.
"Well let's go get a drink." Brad said pulling her away from the crowded place.
Luke's parties were always big. Every corner was occupied by making out couples or stranded loners looking for partners. The parties were also for the popular in school, you know, game players, cheerleaders... people like that. Lyric and Brad had been dancing for as long as they could remember and decided to take a break. They walked into Brad's jeep and moments later they were making out at the back seat. Everything got heated up pretty fast and before long they were passing second base.
"Brad, Brad, stop." Lyric said pulling away.
"Every time." Brad sighed in disappointment.
"Well take a hint." Lyric replied.
"Till when?" Brad asked.
"When am ready?" Lyric said in a manner it came out more like a question than a statement.
"Whatever you say." Brad replied.
Lyric then saw Megan lurking at the entrance of the party and knew it was time to leave.
"I gotta go now." She said exiting Brad's jeep.
