Tess
I look at them. Sizing them up. Calculating their level of danger. Wondering why The Vision chose them. Them out of all people.
Despite the prohibition, I use my paranormal ability. My eyesight turns into a digital screen, showing immediate background checks of everyone I set my focus on.
Camilla Pierce, born 24th March 1999 in South Dakota, attended South Valley Elementary, moved to Detroit 27th November 2008; reasons are miscellaneous.
I narrow my eyes at her, and look at her from head to toe. Her petite frame made her seem harmless, but I knew better than to underestimate the power of someone The Vision set their eyes on. Her bouncy black mane and dimples made her seem like a sweetheart, which made me all the more questioning. No bag, I note. I concealed my skepticism and made my move. Pulling out a huge grin, I skipped over to her and Barbara Harrison.
"Oh my god! Barbara Harrison?! What on Earth are you doing here?!" I exclaimed falsely.
Camilla was too astounded by my sudden appearance, that she missed the look of confusion on Barbara's face. I captured Barbara's blue irises with mine and slowly inhaled her memory, replacing it with the fake one The Vision had ordered me to implant into her. Camilla looked back at Barbara just as her glazed over expression disappeared.
"No freaking way," Barbara started with a grin growing onto her face, "Bitch, why didn't you tell me you were transferring here?" she asked accusingly.
"I would have, if you hadn't stopped asking about us," I shot right back with a knowing smirk.
Barbara gave me an apologetic look, "I know, I know, but you know the whole parents ordeal about talking to you guys. I got in trouble last time I got caught, they still believe you guys were dealing."
"Yeah yeah don't worry about it, you're excused," I say nonchalantly while grabbing her for a hug.
Silence grows on us and I pretend to look embarrassed. "Oh my god, I'm so rude. So so sorry, I didn't mean to intrude you guys like that," I start.
"No no! It's absolutely fine!" Camilla assured me with a sweet smile, "How do you guys know each other?"
"Oh Barbara and I go way back," I said with a covert smile, "But that's up to her to tell."
Camilla looked over to Barbara with a questioning look. "Long story short, we were together in class 6-7 years ago," Barbara explained quickly with a reminiscing chuckle.
"Good old days," I laugh.
"Amen to that," Barbara replied with a laugh of her own.
"I'm Tess, by the way," I say to Camilla, extending my hand out.
"I'm Camilla, and I don't do handshakes," she said, wrapping her arms around me.
"Oh, even better!" I said. And easier. "I'm glad I'm not the only hugger here," I chuckle, hugging her back. I let my finger tips lightly touch her back pocket.
"I'd love to stay around and chitchat, but I've got Psychology in.." I check my phone, "3 minutes ago. Great, first day and I'm already late," I give them a sheepish smile, "I'll catch you guys later!" I shout as I twirl around, lightly tapping my back pocket in the process.
Once I'm out of sight, my face goes back to it's initial skepticism. I reach into my back pocket, taking out the small piece of card with the locker number and combination written on.
"And Bingo was his name-o," I whisper.
I wait for the herd of students to hurry into their classrooms and empty the hallway before I go hunting for Little Miss Sunshine's locker. Please let her car keys be in there, I think as I enter the locker combination.
Instead of piles of books, I am met with chocolate colored irises.
"Nice try," she said.
I jump back while holding in a gasp and said: "I should've seen it coming."
"Yes you should have," Camilla said disappointedly, as she takes out her legs from the tiny locker and jumps out.
"So what, you're a shapeshifter?" I ask, ridiculed.
Camilla snorts. "Please," she said, walking away, motioning me to follow. "You know how the human body is 70% water?" she asks rhetorically, "Well, I'm 70% gas," she turns to me and looks at me seriously.
"Excuse me?" I asked, trying to swallow down my laughter.
"Allow me to elaborate," she continues walking and I follow, "I'm made up of organs just like any other human body. The only difference is that my blood cells are subtended into a gas called Xynogen, unlike your plasma fluid. This allows me to have gaseous characteristics. I'm easily compressed, easily expanded, I can take up the volume of any container, I can penetrate through the tiniest of holes, I can divide myself easily into millions of particles and form myself back together again in less than a second." And suddenly, she dispersed into the air.
"Need I go on?" I heard behind me.
"I must say," I start, turning my back vision on, "I'm almost impressed."
"Good, but I don't exist to impress you," she said, and continued walking to the right.
"Then do you mind explaining why you've just explained to me your so-called paranormal abilities?" I asked challengingly, following her once again.
"Because you misunderstood. Excuse me for trying to set your limited intelligence straight," she shot back.
"Fair enough," I retort, "Can I ask Your Wiseness where you're leading me to?"
"Me," a voice says.
I look over to see a pale skinny skater boy with a big mop of black hair piled at the top of his head.
Beck Pierce, born 24th March 1999 in South Dakota, attended South Valley Elementary, moved to Detroit 27th November 2008; reasons are miscellaneous.
I bite my lip discreetly in frustration for not being able to penetrate their backgrounds and size him up. Again, seems harmless, but I'm not even slightly doubtful he's capable of more than what he seems to be.
He cocked his head to the side mockingly. "Are you checking me out?" he asked rather conceitedly, wiggling his bushy, black brows.
"Let me guess, you were born with gas in your head," I deadpanned.
"Close," he smirked, "I can control my deoxyribonucleic acid."
I blinked at him.
"Deoxyribonucleic acid is what's responsible for dividing your cells during the processes of mitosis and meiosis. He can replicate every cell in his body and then divide his body into two, creating two replicas of himself," Camilla explained to me, flashing me a knowing smile.
I rolled my eyes, "Don't you mean DNA?" I asked, annoyed.
"Yeah, sure. You can call it that. Just like all the humans," she said, making it seem like humanity is some sort of a flaw. "Why are you looking for us?" she asked.
"Oh honey, don't fool yourself, I'm not sent here to find you two. You two are just simply part of what I'm looking for," I retorted back.
"Who else are you looking for?" Beck asked.
"Do you guys know where I could find a Zara Hunt?" I asked.
Camilla looked pointedly at Beck, who had a sheepish, yet sly, lazy smile on his face.
"Oh I do. I always do," he sighed.
