She grasped his hand tightly, trying to bring him back to reality. "Asa, Asa!" Dawn sighed, reaching up and running a hand through her hair. After a couple more pointless attempts at getting his attention, she pinched his arm.

"Ow! Dammit Dawn! That hurt." Asa's eyes darted to the hand gripping his own, then to the familiar, wide, bright green staring up at his worriedly.

"Sorry, but it was the only way to get your attention at the moment. You were staring off into space again. What's wrong, love?" Dawn squeezed his hand slightly, her unoccupied hand resting just above the bend of his arm. She tilted her head, her purple-dyed bangs falling into her eyes. Asa had to fight the urge to move them off.

"Nothing, I'm alright. I was just thinking." Asa tried to reassure her, but it was hard to be dishonest while looking into those beautiful eyes. "You look really pretty today, D." He brought his hand up and brushed the bangs out of the way, quickly bringing it back down afterwards. He was trying to distract her or at least change the subject.

Dawn sighed quietly, closing her eyes. A few moments passed before she opened them again. She grabbed his other hand, intertwining all of there fingers and staring at up at him with an annoying look on her face. "Don't lie to me, you're not fine. What were you thinking about, A?"

He put his forehead against the sea green lockers next to her head, closing his jaw tightly to keep him from speaking.

Dawn let out another sigh, this one filled with obvious frustration. "Fine, don't tell me." Releasing his hands and walking away briskly away from her best friend, she brought her hand up to her face, chewing her already bitten nails. It was a bad habit of hers when she was stressed or overthinking. It made her nervous when he was upset and didn't tell her about it. It made her anxious, on the other hand, when he lied to her about it.

"Don't bite her nails, D." Asa's voice was quiet, but still audible enough for her to hear in the empty hallway.

"Excuse me?" The words came out of her mouth sounding more harsh than she had meant it. Dawn closed her mouth before speaking again, this time more quiet and slowly. "You have absolutely no right to tell me what to do and what not to do. Especially when you're acting like that. I know something is wrong, Asa, but every time I ask you anything about it you either lie to me or you shut me out and change the subject. It's not fair. It's not."

Asa straightened up, turning to face her. The worried look on her face made him feel guilty knowing that he was the one making her feel this way, and the pain in her voice broke his heart into pieces. He couldn't tell her. Not yet, anyway. He kept his jaw tight and his mouth closed.

She shook her head slowly, the heels of her black vans squeaking slightly against the tiled floor of the Ridgemoor High School hallway as she turned and walked out the double doors at the front of the school.

"Dawn, I love you." He sucked in a breath sharply as he watched his best friend leave. Asa turned around and slammed his fist into the lockers. "Dammit!"
