My shoes are now completely soaked through with a mixture of mud and water, seeing that I've been running through these woods for who knows how long.
The moon shines just bright enough through the canopy of trees above me for me to be able to see where I'm going.
My guess is that it's probably around midnight, but with no recollection of how I even got here makes it difficult to tell. It's sort of funny in a way that I'm worrying about what the time it is when I'm running for my life from the things that were sent to murder me.
The voices of the ones who want me dead, cloud my thoughts as the darkness begins to close in on me from every direction. The scenery of oak trees and pines fly past me in a haze as I keep on sprinting at full speed to get away from the "whisperers".
I feel that name is appropriate for the ones who want my head on a platter, since that's how they get you, they hide out in the shadows until your mind is vulnerable enough to go in for the kill. Meaning that first, it starts as a whisper in your ear, then it escalates, they creep into your mind through the dream realm. The whisperers are the ones who mess with your head and change things around. The ones who cloud your brain with darkness.
Im not even sure what these elusive and deadly creatures are, but what I do know is that they never stop searching until they get what they want- your mind.
" You can't escape what's coming..." One of the voices taunts. " You should just stop running, your only wasting your breath- well, not that that will matter much once we get ahold of you..." Another hisses followed by some sort of demented laughter from several of the whisperers. "Just wait, what we have in store for you is extra special." One taunts followed by more laughter from the demon-like creatures.
The voices whisper from the shadows that the trees cast along the narrow dirt path that I run down.
I begin to see a figure fabricating in the distance as I get closer the more I run. The closer I get I can make out more details of this mysterious figure. I push through some brush as I keep on going and I can now tell that the person standing in the way is a man, and from the looks of him, pretty young too.
His light brown hair sways softly in the night breeze. He stands around 6'2" which seems enormous to my 5'5" height. As I come closer to him his eyes lock on me, but he still just stands there. Second by second I grow closer to him," Please you've gotta help me."
I plead as I double over and begin panting, trying to catch my breath.
As I'm bent over I begin to hear a faint laugh. It begins to get louder and I realize that the boy is the one laughing. "What so funny?" I ask confused and still out of breath. I can begin to feel anger wash over me while he just stands there with his head bowed low so I can't see his face anymore. My hands ball up into fists as he just stands there snickering like something is actually funny.
"I'm sorry-" he tries to speak through his laughter. "It's just that, I didn't expect you to be so stupid."
Suddenly his head raises and the first thing I notice is that his eyes have changed from a hazel green to jet black. An evil smile forms on his lips as he tilts his head slightly to the side, examining me.
"What the-" Is all I manage to get out before I feel his large hand reach around my neck and lift me off the ground. My hands fly up to try and loosen his grip, but he only squeezes tighter. "You know, I'm really disappointed in you." He says with that demented grin on his face.
"From what I've heard about you, you don't see to me like the gullible type." He taunts. "It's a real shame you know, so young..."
The next thing I know, I feel him let go of my neck only to throw me against the trunk of a nearby tree. I hear something crack as I hit the rough bark. I can't tell if the sound is the a branch snapping or if it was my spine. I hit the ground abruptly and slump over to the side, as the pain is coming from my back.
"Out of all the ones that I've been sent to- well you know- "finish off," you've definitely been the most entertaining." He says to me before slugging me across the jaw.
I let out a cry as reach up to cradle my face.
"Why are you doing this?" I manage to ask though the pain. I look up at him to see his face twisted into that same ruthless smirk. "Now that there is the million dollar question, but you'll just have to wait and find out."
He knelt down in front of me still with that smirk stretched across his face and I don't want to give him the satisfaction of knowing that I'm terrified.
I'm terrified of that inevitable end that awaits us all.
But instead of breaking down in tears and begging for my life, I lift up my face and stare boldly into his eyes.
"Oh, are we getting a little brave now?" He asks rhetorically. I don't say anything I only stare at him with muddled feelings of fear and rage.
"Oh, I see you're giving me the silent treatment, now my feelings are hurt." He teases.
"If you're gonna do it just get it over with already." I say through gritted teeth.
"Alrighty then, if the lady insists." He says just before clamping his hand around my throat again and begins lifting me up from where I had been leaning against the tree.
I gasp for air as he lifts me up to where my feet can no longer touch the ground.
"This has been fun, we should do this more often." He says just before I feel my whole body go numb from lack of oxygen to my brain.
"See you soon." He whispers into my ear just before I black out.
