The seed was planted long ago,
Then branches appeared young and low.
The great oak trunk became sturdy and strong,
And it stayed that way for very long.
Generations ago children began to climb,
Slowly at first, one at a time.
Then they trusted the tree and the tree trusted them,
The heart of their childhood their one happy gem.
The trust began to waver when the first child fell,
The tree became worried and began to dwell.
Slowly the great oak melted away,
No more than a memory one might say.
Now no one remembers when the seed was planted long ago,
Or when the branches appeared young and low,
Or how the great oak trunk became sturdy and strong,
Or how it stayed that way for very long.
