I awoke with sunlight immersing my fur. I stretched and slowly stood up.
"Starflower, you're awake." I turned around to see my mate, Tigerheart, standing in the warrior cat den entrance. "Come, eat with me."
I padded after Tigerheart who had already approached the fresh kill pile. He picked up a vole and passed it to me. I licked his ear affectionately and ate the vole.
"There was a big catch on the hunting patrol at dawn. I know Brightpaw caught a mouse." Tigerheart purred and ate the rest of the vole that I didn't.
"Where is she? Where is Duskpaw and Fallenpaw?" I asked, curious.
"I know Duskpaw is training with her mentor, Breezewhisker. I think Fallenpaw is with Brightpaw by the Ancient Oak. But don't worry, Lavenderheart is with them."
I sighed. "She has deputy duties to do."
Lavenderheart was my littermate. She was always more loyal to ThunderClan than I could ever imagine. I knew that when Firestar picked her to be deputy, he had made the greatest choice ever.
I also knew StarClan was proud. Leafpool had told me herself, even though she wasn't allowed to do that.
Then, a yowl ringed through the camp. My ears perked up and I looked toward the camp entrance.
There was Lavenderheart with Duskpaw and Fallenpaw. I rushed up to them.
"I'm sorry, Starflower," Lavenderheart said, motioning for my kits to go to the apprentice den with her tail. I looked at her, confused. She raised her voice. "We sighted badgers by the lake. I don't think they're coming but I'm not sure."
"Tell Firestar." I urged and ran over to my kits. Tigerheart ran after me.
"What is happening?" He asked, eyes wide.
"Lavenderheart saw badgers by the lake. She doesn't think they saw her, but they have strong noses. Get the kits inside the apprentice den!"
Tigerheart bowed his head and flicked the kits inside with a flick of his tail.
When Tigerheart had finished getting my kits in the apprentice den, he walked over to me.
"Should we check it out? See if the badgers are following their scent trail back to camp?" He asked.
"No." I said, looking back to the camp entrance. "If the badgers smell our scent, they could easily track it. For now I think we should hide in the trees where the badgers can't see or smell us. Let's go."
We raced past Lavenderheart and Firestar and climbed the trees, Tigerheart on the tree across from me. I looked below me carefully, watching for any sudden movement.
I glanced up at Tigerheart and saw he was a branch below me, looking down as well.
"Do you see anything?" I hissed.
"No. I don't smell any scent of badgers, either." He said.
Then, Tigerheart froze. His back arched and I looked where he was looking. Badgers.
