Tony shot up in his bed with a start. A tear trickled down his face and he quickly wiped it away. He was an Avenger. He wasn't supposed to cry. A pretty lousy Avenger if you ask me. He shook his head, attempting to make the voices go away. Last night's nightmare was nothing compared to the others. He remembered one being so bad that he didn't leave his bed the entire day.
That was the one where your little Steven was dead. And it was your fault. Everyone blamed you. But the one person that gave you the hardest time was yourself.
He shook his head again as he made coffee. He gulped down the warm, brown liquid and sighed. He didn't mean to become depressed. He honestly hadn't expected to feel this way. Over time his thoughts got the best of him. He was the one in the team that usually made the mistakes. The miscalculations. His missions somehow ended up having more civilians dead. He felt worthless. A failure. Like he had let everyone, including himself, down. Even Cap.
Cap was his world, though he would never let anyone know. Yeah, they had had their disagreements, but Tony loved Cap. With everything in him. And the thing that killed him the most was that he was somehow letting him down.
Of course you are, Tony. I mean, look at Cap. He's so brave and full of integrity and truth and he's so handsome. You'll never be even close to deserving of him.
Tony didn't even attempt to block it out this time. He knew the words were true. He knew that he would never be good enough. He would never amount up to the man he loved more than anything. And Cap would never love someone as useless as him. He had accepted that.
Tony dragged his feet to the closet and picked out a suit for the party they were having tonight in celebration of another 'successful' mission.
You don't even deserve to go to this party. You only held them back and you know it.
He sighed and put on the suit and headed to the party.
